Why do we care so much about oil?

I find all the additives and what they do interesting. The same goes for lubes for my firearms. I will say I spend too much time reading and pondering over which motor oil to use in my car or whether oil or grease is better for my 1911 etc.

Changing oil makes owners feel like they are doing some good for their investments.
Also changing oil allows even the unskilled to share in the maintenance of
said investment.

Because it's a variable that's easily and cheaply controlled?
If we're all honest with ourselves, though, I think that we'd all have to conceed that most of the engines most of us have would last just as long and run just as well on a lifetime of quicky lube oil changes at nothing more frequent that the longest drain interval recommended by the manufacturer.

There are a lot of people here with newer cars that want to feed them the best food.

Especially with engine technology making giant moves.

This forum just proves there are a lot of lonesome single dudes sitting at computers globally

Oil is like blood! But it's all about feelings

When u change it even if not needed, it feels good.
I have increased my Oci since on this site so I don't feel as good as often ... lol
My wife calls this my "porn" site.

Some of us work in the Petro-Chemical industry.

Also, BITOG is my "get away" from the daily stress of life. Sort of the cyber equivalent of hangin' out in a man cave.

If you'll notice, many of the threads are only tangentially related to oil. Most have to do with other automotive issues ...

It's place where we can lean on the back fence and kick around ideas

I came here originally 13 years ago (actually longer, I lurked for about a year before registering), I knew a little about oil, almost nothing about filters. I had a basic automotive knowledge base.
It was also a time where there were quite a few members posting that did know a lot about oil, and also a time where there were some big differences in oils, and major changes were happening.

I have learned a lot about oil, as well as many other things.
As said, this site has other areas besides oil discussions.

The truth is, I don't care much about what oil I use.
I use this site a lot for oil/filter deals. I will use the cheapest name brand (or store brand) oil I can get.
I am not an extended oil change person for the most part (although I have finally decided to do an annual oil change on my truck, but is I go by the book for viscosity and have learned xw-20 oils are not the death of an engine.

It is about longevity of owned vehicles, learning, some fanboyism, going to back to what family members did with us and taught us and more than this as well.

I enjoy learning so much about a myriad of topics on here. Not just about oil stuff.

There are a very high number of very accomplished and extremely smart people on here. Within these people are life experiences and careers that cover many areas with tremendous help, knowledge base and experiences.

I enjoy learning from so many really good guys on here.

When I sold my Nissan, I realised that changing everything to synthetics early on, and maintaining it that way meant that I'd invested in the future owner's vehicle.

Had I done simply what the manual called for, it would not have detracted at all from my ownership.

But still, I feel it's the technically correct thing to do.

As to BITOG...there's a lot better conversation to be had here than in most of real life.

Because oil can be very complicated, or very simple, depending on the viewpoints. That makes for a lot of interest and a wide sectrum of discussions.

Most car enthusiasts want to use products that keep their ride in good shape, like it's the last car they'll ever own. I'd bet most people that don't keep a vehicle very long aren't as concern how it's taken care of.

Well, there is plenty of that here.

I find the OCD types pretty funny, they get wound up about things that don't matter at all. Alarming they know so much about oil, but little else about their car. Office workers obsessed about oil. I came here many years ago to find something specific, found some interesting stuff, but less and less these days.

+1 Also I think because oil is very mysterious. We know what it does but we can't see it working or how it is working. Most of our data is anecdotal. It's one of the few forums that I continue to visit and I can't give you a good reason why.
My oil change OCD began my senior yr. in college. I had just bought a 64 Bug. I was headed to school for my senior Yr. with a good running car, money in the bank and everything I owned in the car. I was going to have fun before dying in Viet Nam. That was our mentality in 1970. Got 35 miles from school when the engine let go on I-95. Long story shortened, I had to pull the engine and rebuild it. The oil hadn't been changed regularly and the main bearings were aluminum foil in the oil filter screen. I didn't know squat about engines but my roommate did so he helped me. Took most of my money and a whole semester to get it back on the road. So I became real OCD about changing my oil for the rest of my life. All I can say is that the people who bought my high mileage cars benefitted from my 3k oc's.
