Yup, volume counts in spreading the load (contaminates and dilution)

Funny how my Hyundai manual calls for an A5/B5 oil, among other things, but then sets an OCI of 3750/7500 miles and says anything but 90% highway miles is extreme service and the OCI is 3750 miles....

Pennzoil Ultra 5W-30 (VERY recent!) so check the bottle
Castrol Edge 5W-30 10W-30 (both Syntec and Titanium)

NOTE: M1 HM 10W-30 is A3/B4 and NOT A5/B5!

Thanks for actually answering the OP's question! I didn't know Castrol's 5W-30 was finally A5/B5. Good to know. Surprised that Valvoline lost A5/B5.

Also, FYI, M1 HM 10W-30 is A3/B3, not B4.

I'm pretty sure Synpower 5W30 was A5/B5, guess it got dropped in the change to Advanced Full Synthetic?

Pennzoil just released the new redesigned formula of their Pennzoil Platinum oil (not Ultra) for TGDI engine to the grading of API SN PLUS standard. It's specific address for the Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) well known issue for GDI engine. You can find more details from this forum and their official web site regarding the new formula.

It meet the requirement of ACEA A5 which showing on the bottle label. Also need to notice the manufacturing date is on May or after. If yes, the donut label will show API SN PLUS too.

Maybe they realised you cannot be A5/B5 while claiming it's not for use in diesel engines calling for an A5/B5 oil. It's A5/B5 for all A5/B5 applications, or it's not. Castrol dropped A5/B5 until they got the B5 portion sorted out. Valvoline can do the same.

Thanks Garak. So in summary:

5W-30 with A5/B5:
- Pennzoil
- Mobil
- Castrol
- Liqui-Moly (0W-30 and 5W-30... no d1g2)
- Motul (0W-30)

Those without:
- Valvoline
-

Which "Mobil" are you referring to in your summary?

I just looked in my garage and:

PPPP 5Wx30 (5 qt) says ACEA A1/B1, A5/B5. It's d1g2.

M1 EP 5Wx30 (5 qt) only shows A1/B1 even though it's "extended" and d1g2.

I also have M1 EP 10Wx30 again only indicates A1/B1 and doesn't show d1g2.

So none of my M1 EPs are A5/B5. Not that I care but what's up with that!

Regular m1 has a5/b5 classification and m1 ep does not!?
I assumed higher x (Ax/Bx) meant more extended oci, you know the higher the number/letter the better ... but it doesn't sound like it. First time I got curious about that rating. Need to study it a little. lol

There is no longer A1/B1... it has been replaced by A5/B5 (both are HTHS >3.0 oils)

There is also A3/B3 and A3/B4, which are both HTHS >3.5 oils.

A3/B4 has stricter standards than A3/B3. A5/B5 has to pass all of the same stringent standards as A3/B4, while being a thinner oil.

ACEA-16 dropped A1/B1 but Mobil still List's it. Also, B3, B4 and B5 are diesel oil specs.

Wasn't Valvoline full syn A5/B5? I checked recently and they no longer have that listed in the product sheet.

Yep A5/B5 requires HTHS between 2.9 and 3.5 cP
While A3/B3 and A3/B4 require HTHS above 3.5 cP

For A5/B5 and A3/B3 you need a min TBN of 8
For A3/B4 you need a min TBN of 10

All have to pass wear tests, but A5/B5 and A3/B4 are held to a higher standard.

All require a Noack volatility of 13% or less. Recall API SN is 15% and Dexos is also 13%.

The A part is for petrol (gas) engines and the B part is for diesel engines, but the oil must pass both parts, you can't claim just A or B alone. That's good IMO as some "diesel" tests like shear stability and soot handling force they oil to be better formulated.

Here is a link to the 2016 ACEA Sequences (ACEA 2016 PDF)

In Australia 3 out of 4 oils would be A3/B4 or A3/B3

For A5/B5 we get a very nice Castrol Edge 10W30, Magnatec 5W30 and SynPower FE 5W30 which is A5/B5 and Ford 913D and high zinc (therefore API SL).

That 10W30 A5/B5 rings my bell and should have excellent shear stability and nice low volatility. But I do like the extra ZDDP in the Ford 913D oil (SynPower). I have both in the oil stash as well as a GTX 15W40 Ultraclean which is A3/B3. The Penrite semi-synthetic 10W40 I'm using now is A3/B4 and also high zinc (TBN = 11.0 and Zinc = 1220 ppm) as the ACEA sequences don't have as restrictive Phos limits (and therefore ZDDP limits) as API. But our exhaust cats are fine here and always seem go the distance. I like ZDDP as it's is both an antioxidant that protects the oil and an anti-wear agent that protects the metal.

BTW this thread was started 7 years ago

There is some question with respect to M1 with labels and sheets not always agreeing, and there was with Castrol at least for a time. In the end, though, these problems were on the B5 side of things. The ACEA rules are clear on the matter, and if it's not B5, it's not A5/B5. Nonetheless, I'd consider M1, the Castrol, and the Valvoline as suitable where an A5/B5 would be called for. I'd throw QSUD in there, too.
