First let me say I am not a fan of additives. I do use a carb/injector cleaner every 5K miles or so.

I had a very unfavorable opinion of Sea Foam bc of my internal wiring..what I believe is what it is.

Fast forward: My Subaru 08 very well kept burned oil at over 70mph. As much as a quart in 250 miles. I switched to 40 wt and if I stay under 70 mph it uses almost no oil.

I had my subaru specialist check the vehicle out bc I was planning on giving it to a grandchild. I asked him to rereplace the screen on the fuel pump (in the tank) he told me in his experience it is not necessary. But he indicated that If I run a can of SeaFoam through the fuel system and add it at a half tank or less I would be good to go.

On a trip; my subaru for the first 4 years would deliver 30+ mpg. But since then usually gets 27+. I went out to Pittsburg with a full tank and a can of Seafoam. Over 470 miles the mileage was 30.1 mpg. I was very careful to fill the vehicle at the start and end of trip on the level at the same pump. I got 7 gallons out in Pittsburgh. So I have no doubt this was no error or no coincidence. I just added another can again.

I will give all of my vehicles a SeaFoam every 5 or 6K miles.

I'd be worried that oil consumption issue will return. Driving under 70 wouldn't be a viable solution for me.

Interesting data point.
Keep us posted on the improved fuel economy.

Long trip. sustained speeds.. yeah u will get better gas mileage.

Since u ran seafoam thru the system take off that fuel filter and sieve it thru a papertowel... you will probably see black crud.

Been there done that with my past subies.

Have u tried looking at the PCV for your consumption? Mine always got sticky.

Black crud. Is it wear from the fuel pump brushes?

Would running something through the fuel system actually slow down consumption? Unless the fuel spray is hitting the oil control rings or soaking through the carbon, I don't see how things will change. Id imagine dumping half in the oil sump and doing a short interval to help the consumption would help out more before the fuel.

Where in NJ is the speed limit higher than 70? I must have missed it..

I too don't think that I can correlate using sea foam to reduced oil consumption. Higher MPGs perhaps.

But higher MPGs also come from driving slower. I don't think Al reported his average speed or consumption.

Exactly. Thatr spike in consumption was up on highway 68 in WV (long hills going west. I drove the vehicle harder than I ever have. A quart every 4000 before trip (mostly leasurly driving) and with 40 wt probably a quart every 6K miles. Note I am not giving credit to sea foam..."Its the 40 wt stupid"

Driving 69 mph in my third "junker" isn't an issue. Nor is an issue for my 2018 Subaru XT or even my 2018 Chevy spark.

Happy 4th

And about "worrying about an extra oil consumption on a vehicle with 180+ K miles on it

I have more important things to worry about..like..do I need to get a haircut this week.
