Shorter rifles are better than longer rifles. A modern shorter hider gives you a shorter rifle for free.

Does the M1A/M14 need a compensator/muzzle brake?

I've shot my brother's M1A and found it quite pleasant. Noticeably less recoil than a Garand, which I'm happy to shoot as well.

Good question at 74 the only gun I find that I like with a brake is my .378 Weatherby.

Does it need one? No. Will it allow you to shoot more rapidly and get back on target faster? Yes.

I don't think they are obnoxious enough to really want a brake.

OTOH, I think the PTR91 with a flash hider has acceptable recoil too, so I might be weird.
