I have always been a big fan of Denso oil filters. I make it a habit to throw a couple on every Rockauto purchase if the shipping warehouses align just right. Cost $4 and change, silicone ADBV, even pleat spacing, thick media, tough can. I've opened a few after oil changes and I'm always impressed at the value-- haven't found anything else that beats it for the price.
I received a couple today and they're clearly not the same filters as the old ones. The old one has been the same can, design, construction going back 10+ years that I've been ordering them. I don't know that you can call it outsourcing since the originals are made in Taiwan, but these new ones are now made in China. No more silicon ADBV, cheap flimsy can, the holes on the inside are louvers so I can't get a good view of pleat spacing unless I open it up-- definitely some cost cutting going on here. The side of the box no longer details all the fine points of the filter construction (efficiency, materials used, etc.) The even cheaped out on the package, the old one had a nice gloss finish and very robust.
It'll be the last time I order a Denso filter-- these would probably be okay compared next to an E-core, Supertech, Fram, STP, Pentius (a Rockauto brand I think) and other $2-3 filters. But at $4, it just doesn't cut the mustard.
Old filter purchased 1-2 years ago on right. New filters left and middle. Left is a PH3600 equivalent, middle is a PH16 equivalent. If you look closely, the middle and left don't even look like the same filter (at least the base plate doesn't). What do ya'll think?
