So I got to thinking, since walmart has trailer tires in my size (B78-13ST) for $27, maybe the time has come to refresh the rubber on my tow-dolly-of-doom. I've noticed the tires being hot when I get home, not sure if this is normal, but sketchy to me. The old sidewalls look passable on first glance:

But then flex them a little and SWEET BABY JESUS:

DOT code might be a 3-digit, might be a 5. Curious about the smaller digits. I guess you could say these were made in Xmas week of 1993, but what of the other two digits? Should I get them on a lottery ticket? laugh

Incidentally these come off real easy with the HF changer-- don't know why so many people buy the mounted ones.

That sidewall was cracking like an overpriced Michelin.

Which is why I am done with Michelin, except for Motorcycle tires, they never go over a year.

is there a different (Longer) DOT Code on the other side?
what's pictured is not enough digits.
I even tried with the 34 and it just comes back that the last 2 must be between 00-20 (checked via the Tire facts app)

Duro brand, the lettered DOT code indicates Made-in-Taiwan but no COO on the tires themselves. Probably was good enough to just have it on the stickers.

No other embossed stuff on opposite sidewalls.

Or if you're asking about the new tires, they're (Provider) Taskmaster 668s, will know COO when they get in later this week.

Don't see how sidewall cracks could heat a tyre unless they are letting the air out.

If you don't maintain the air pressure, the tyres will heat and probably crack, so it may be an effect rather than a cause.

Well it could also just be the smaller tires work harder, or there could be some scrubbing going on due to the natural geometric limitations. (It only rotates a couple degrees.)

It would be a wonder if 25 year old tires weren't cracked.

eljefino,

How old is the dolly? That might be a clue about the date code on the tires.

The DOT code: Clearly the first 2 digits are the plant code, and the next 2 are the size code (looked it up in the RMA size code manual!). It is not unusual for the type code (the 3 or 4 digits after the size code but before the date code) to be left out.

The date code seems to be OK except for that unusual "34" in small letters just after the full sized letters. I note that those last digits are on a thin plate that appears to be screwed into the mold (sort of - There is a hint of a Phillips head.) This was fairly common practice. My best guess as to the significance of the "34" is it is a numbering system to assure that ALL the date code plates have been changed.

Hot tires? I'm going to guess that when loaded, the tires are at or even overloaded. That would not be inconsistent about what I know about how dollies are designed - especially older ones!
