I seem to be snake bit when it comes to entering contests or playing the lottery. A couple of months back, I went to AutoZone for one of their oil change specials. I picked up 6 Qt. of Valvoline Advanced Synthetic and an STP Maximum Life oil filter (Purolator Boss). I took the receipt and entered the code with Valvoline. On Thursday, UPS delivered a cardboard envelope to my home. I open it and it contains a $100 gift card for AutoZone. It sometimes pays to enter these contests.

A IRS form 1099-MISC is not issued or reported unless the winnings total more than $600. He will be fine.
