Hyundai announced Tuesday that it plans to invest $388 million to build a 260,000-square-foot engine head manufacturing plant to produce its next-generation engine, which includes new technologies and components, as well as updating its existing engine plant. The engines will be used in Montgomery and at the Kia facility in West Point, Georgia, construction should be finished next year.

It will mean 50 new jobs with an average annual salary of $52,000.

Those workers start next March, but the company has already started fielding applications. Plant spokesman Robert Burns said some new positions will be taken by current employees, meaning Hyundai will have to hire people to do the jobs that current workers are leaving.

I hope the next-generation engine is bullet proof. Too many failures since 2011.

I agree its always good when a big company looking to build a plant and hire. Probably lots of people applying for a job there.

Maybe, maybe not.

Lawsuit 2015-2016 Hyundai engines

It looks like it is getting better, but the affected owners will probably never buy Hyundai again.

How they fix the knocking noise in Korea, etc

It's funny that I have had the random murmurings in my head while driving around that I barely see any of the 2006-2010 Sonata's anymore (the generation that kicked off the Montgomery plant), I might see 1 per month if that. Also can't even tell you the last time I saw a 2006-2010 Elantra either (the bubbly one). Despite the 10/100k warranty it seems they run into major issues that put them in the junkyards well before some of their counterparts. Might be an Atlanta thing but I barely see any Hyundai's beyond the last 1-2 generations that came about in 2011/2012.

I lived in Montgomery seven years. Hyundai had mixed impact on that city. It provided jobs, and for Alabama OK jobs (all high paying jobs in Hyundai and Kia are in California) but city relied too much on the plant. They completely neglected other economic issues so while rest of the SouthEast was growing, MGM actually managed to loose population in last ten years.

Until elected officials are somehow held accountable for their decisions expect more mis-management...

Ah do not worry about accountability. In AL since 2008 is race to the bottom.

Isn't that the truth. Would never buy a foreign car. UAW labor only.

I wonder if these plans will change due to recent announcements regarding the price hike of steel and aluminum. Two materials that are pretty important for engine building.

It is hard to explain that to people. Only reason why southern states get these plants is because of cheap labor and "right" to work laws. All these companies keep high paying jobs in NJ. CA etc. In TN VW wanted to unionize workers but TN went nuts over that.

It's also hard to explain why any truck driver is worth more than 30 bucks per hour to them too, but I'll take it lol. My job has firmly placed me in the middle class; the extra money if not for the unions would otherwise go to a few VIPs who get filthy rich from basically stealing your pay because you're not allowed to negotiate it w/o unions.
