I saw the two recent threads of filters that had been in a car at least 2 years by kd5byb

https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/4767827/Fram_XG2,_~4,000_miles,_two_ye

https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/4767822/Fram_TG4386,_three_years,_13,0

This got me thinking--are there any other threads with a filter C&P that have been on the car 2 years or longer?

I thought of SubieRubyRoo's 17K Napa Platinum, but then I went and saw it was on for less than a year. Does anyone remember any others (links if possible)?

Hahahahah!

Nope, that's my "Chuck-n-duck" wood chipper, with a 4-cyl Ford industrial engine.

Only gets used about 2 hours a year.

I like it. Let's call it.....Rusty.

I think Napa has come out with a new line of filters---Napa Copper

I spin it off to prime it every time before using it.

The amount of oil I add - gets leaked out of the front main seal when running 2 hours.

So, yes - the gasket has been reused about 15+ times (I lose track over the years)

It has NEVER leaked once yet from "re-using"

Too bad I can't read the manufacturing date.

I *DID* buy a bunch of FL-1A (PH8A) style filters off RockAuto for 50 cents each, so This One will be getting the cut open after this fall's "tree clean up"

You do realize that every "actual" Guiness World Record is held by Chuck Norris, and every entry in the book simply represents the closes anyone has gotten to Chuck's record, correct?

Interesting. 4 filters, including a Napa ProSelect and a Fram TG, that went 2 years or more, and looked like they all held up well enough.

Now I'm wondering if there are any 2 year FCIs that didn't hold up well.

... definately. I think Norris went 23 years on the same filter.

I think Chuck's still running his original OCOD that failed on day 2... but the engine was so afraid of Chuck it's still running for it's life!

IMHO, I doubt any modern filter is truly compromised by time alone... think about it: a paper or glass media is submerged in oil, which unless it is full of solvents or acids, should not break down since it is designed to be in oil in the first place. Lots of cold starts and short tripping will likely affect paper elements or fiber endcaps due to the increased moisture in the oil (which will likely drive acid formations) and the repeated pressure shocks from cold starts and thick viscosity causing high PSID can damage the element.

If you've got a filter on a car that is driven rarely but when it is it is started, warmed up, and driven until oil reaches 200+ degrees... you'd likely get an extremely long service life like Linctex did even if the mileage does not exceed the filter's rating.

That's right, Paulri, I think mine was on for either 9 or 11 months, but it was a synthetic media filter (NAPA Platinum). I did get some interesting data which some day I will post up here, I got around 250-300 UOAs from Ford Fusions with 2.5L Duratec (Mazda) engines, and to my surprise, there were at least 4 or 5 OCIs on the list that greatly exceeded my 17.2k- I think the longest OCI was nearly 26k!! Unfortunately, I do not have any user names or identifying data with the UOA list, or the engine oils or filters used which would really make for an awesome data set. However, I have been toying around with average wear rates and average OCIs enough that I am very pleased with how my engine is wearing at intervals nearly 2.5 times longer than the universal average.

There are some pretty interesting data points in the set- there are Fe counts as high as 132 over a very short interval (I'm sure the engine likely failed just after or this was a postmortem UOA) and then some in very low single digits like 3 over a 15k OCI. I know not everybody cares, but since I deal with statistics every day it's fun to use the tools at my disposal to analyze something I actually care about

FWIW, even though the pics of my NAPA Platinum were fairly ugly, the filter held up great and insolubles were actually the lowest they have ever been on this engine. My next UOA will be on a MicroGreen filter so we will see how that sucker fares!

I've got a couple posted, nothing interesting, the wix was plugged up as the engine was going through some major cleanup. Fine grit, could not tell until looking close, but op drop was a tell tale.

Man, what is it? looks like a Motorcraft, be cool to see what it looks like when you finally change it!

Dyusik, I'd have loved to have seen the wix pics, but they were hosted offsite and my browser didn't show any pics (even when clicking on the links). Do you still have the wix pics?
