A rotary engine is a beautiful thing.

No, it's not a radial engine. This is an example of a rotary engine.

This is a radial engine

You're right. I should've watched the video first, to see that the crankshaft was remaining stationary, making it in fact a Rotary.

Its both. Radial cylinder layout, rotary in terms of having a static crank.

No holds barred type stuff!

Here's a real rotary radial

If you read aviation history a special problem surfaced as soon as the
synchronized gun led to combat aerobatics... with a 300 lb engine
turning clock wise at 1200 rpms in the nose of a 1200 lb aircraft the
rotary's gyroscopic effect in turns was formidable but the pursuit
pilot quickly learned to execute instant left turns helped by the
gyroscopic procession whereas right turns were a wrestle with the
controls... all in all the early pioneers learned real quick that the
rudder is your savior to arrest the spin...

The Rotary was a great design because the spinning engine keep its cool faced with
the slow moving early birds...

You can clearly see the torque effect opposite to the clockwise
spinning engine... note a Rotary will idle...
