I am an Aussie, and have a Ford BA XR6 Turbo Sedan.

Drive pretty steadily, no funny stuff, and in the last 11 months have only done a bit over 4,000 miles.

I have found 2 cheaper oils, and an expensive oil. After some opinions on which to use?!

Shell Helix HX7 Engine Oil - 10W-40

http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Shell-Helix-HX7-Engine-Oil-10W-40-5-Litre/215340

Castrol Magnatec Engine Oil -10W-40

http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Castrol-Magnatec-Engine-Oil-10W-40-5-Litre/1733

And the more expensive Penrite HPR 10 Engine Oil - 10W-50

http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Penrite-HPR-10-Engine-Oil-10W-50-6-Litre/518956

I used the Penrite previously (it could have been the HPR 5, cant remember exactly).

I'm in the US so only have opinion but from what I've read the Penrite might be the best, followed by Helix.

Hey Mate,

They are all good oils, but I'm not an Falcon XR6-Turbo expert.

The two 10W-40's (HX7 & Magnatec) are both semi-synthetics with API SN and ACEA A3/B4 which is a good combination of American & Euro specs. The HX7 also has a few OEM specs like VW 502/505.

The Penrite HPR 10 is a full synthetic also with SN & A3/B4 plus even more OEM specs.

For a turbo, especially an older one, I would be inclined to go full synthetic.

Back in the day, I was a big Penrite HPR fan, but now days I prefer a tighter oil with less polymer VII. A narrower viscosity range. Something like a Penrite Full Synthetic 10W40. That would be my pick.

I should also point out that Valvoline SynPower 5W40, Castrol Edge 5W40 and Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 are all good quality full synthetics, that are regularly on sale at SuperCheapAuto, Repco or AutoBarn.

Just google their catalogues and keep an eye on the sales. Buy when on sale. You do low KMs so you can afford to wait a few weeks until an oil you like is 20% to 40% off.

Thanks mate, found some Valvoline Synpower 5W40 for only $6.77AU a liter, so only around $48 for what I need.

oil is oil. Look at the ratings. Choose a quality blender.

Out of those three, only the HPR 10.

The first one (Enviro+ 10W40) is more for diesel engines, and the second oil (GF-5 5W30) is a thin resource conserving (fuel economy) oil which is not the sort of thing I would put in a 4.0 L Turbo in-line 6 cylinder.

Does olive oil have the proper ratings?

Good to know, thanks again.

$97AUD for 10 liters so reasonably priced.

Good choice, if I had to buy something this weekend, that is what I would grab.

Make sure you get the regular (full-SAPS) Valvoline SynPower 5W40 (A3/B4) and not the mid-SAPS SynPower 5W40 MST (C3). Both would work, especially at your low annual KM, but since you can use full-SAPS oils then that is what I would use.
