Dug out some turbo australia mags from the 80s for the F1 fuel thread...so glad I kept them, so here's some of the adds for oil in the 80s in Oz performance mags.

Have mentioned before that Mobil offered "20,000km" protection on their premium dino in the 80s.

Corse+ was a dino 25W50

And M1 was advertised as 40,000km protection (25,000 miles).

Apologies for the poor pics...the cats decided that what I was doing was interesting and wanted to "help"

If I can work out the wireless scanner after having to have reinstalled Win 10 on my laptop, I'll try to do better.

I was pouring ARCO Graphite into my 1979 Olds Cutlas Salon V8 5spd manual 2dr Coupe.

Never going to see Oil OR cars like that again!

Boy... 30 years of progress, and yet today's marketing major millenials don't have anything on those from when these ads were made- either that, or all of the oil manufacturers lost their expertise as well!

Curious how we all oohed and aahed at M-1 AP, but come to find out Shannow's had AP+25% on his shelf for 3 decades!

Mammaries!
Really makes me think of how regular M1 is now just a ghost of itself. Really fell off after the coloured caps/Tri Syn era.

Or, there have been no really substantial advances in engine oil, just marketing claims. The real improvements are likely on the (engine) manufacturing side.

I love how the editorial and advertising content intermix so precisely in that mag! Look, an article about turbo cars. Whoa- what's on the opposing page? Look at the brands they tested-- golly! All running full page adverts!

Yes, back in the late '90s/turn of the century, I had a 4Runner RV-6, and was talking to the Mobil technical team. Back when they HAD a technical team that you could talk to rather than an operator with compute access to their recommendation tool.

(All their technical specialists either left the Industry or moved to Penrite it seems).

I asked them about M1 0W40, the old 40,000 mile claims of M1, and BMW/Merc 35,000km oil changes.

Once we got through "manufacturer's intervals, and warranty", and they realised that I was serious, they stated that yes, 40,000km or one year was their technical viewpoint...one year and 5,000km, or one year and 40,000km, or any number in between.

20,000km for their dino ?

Yes they backed that too...
