Agree with you Zee. Reminds me of when I used to stomp on aluminum cans as a kid to be able to fit more of them into a 30 gallon trash bag to be recycled.
 
I was thinking of a small filter joke but then remembered that the recommended filter size for my Nissan VQ35DE appears to have a media capacity of a cotton ball.
 
Zig-zagging like that should help prevent tearing.
Every filter should do that, but its more expensive to make, so no dice.
 
I always love seeing the C&Ps for these Purflux filters.. just because the design is so wild and cool. As oil_film mentioned, I suspect that the zig-zag pattern of the media helps prevent deformation and thus reduce or eliminate tearing and other waviness. Very cool design.

I think that may very well be the tiniest filter I've seen from a car.
