Ubuntu 16.04 LTS stopped receiving updates

One of my ubuntu 16.04 LTS machines stopped receiving any updates several weeks or a month ago. It cannot find any updates when I manually try to run the update process. It is currently on kernel 4.4.0-116.

By comparison, I've got another 16.04 LTS install on an external drive, and that one continues to receive updates regularly. It is currently on kernel 4.4.0-121.

I haven't been able to locate a solution so far - my google skills are failing me.

Any suggestions?

BTW, I know 18.04 official release is right around the corner, so I might just wait for it and try to force that machine to upgrade to 18.04 manually when it comes out, and hopefully it'll fix itself.

Silly question I'm going to ask, if it has a GUI, does the graphical update tool show any updates available?

It does not. It shows "System Up-To-Date".

Thanks! You just helped me solve it. I had that machine set up to look for updates on some mirror server, for whatever reason. I changed it to look on the main US Server, and now it found the updates.

Your "mirrors" (the software repositories are hosted on a plurality of servers all around the world) are likely down. The Software Updater GUI will often fail if even one of those mirrors or repositories is not playing well.

It was weird. It wasn't failing. It was just saying there were no new updates, as if that particular mirror stopped 'mirroring' at some point in the past.
 
Wow, a linux problem solved in < 4 hours and no one suggested wiping your machine clean and installing windows or reinstalling the current OS. lol
