I've had this noise for some time with my Jeep, but it was always after a drive on the freeway and getting off, slowing down to a low speed. It's a scraping, kind of growling noise. I didn't think much of it, and have since replaced the wheel bearings, rotated the tires, and put new brakes on it. Backing plates aren't rubbing. I'm thinking it's the carrier/pinion bearings in the front Dana 30 axle. Starting last week I went to drive it and the sound now appears at low speeds, even when driving from a stop. It's loudest from 5-25 mph, from then on I can't really hear it, it is a Jeep after all, not the quietest machine. It also makes the sound when cold, like right when pulling out of the garage. It got louder last week as I drove it a couple times. Front gear oil is Mobil 1 75w90 with maybe 8k miles on it.

Last week after driving 30 miles home from work, I crawled underneath and felt that the front differential was quite hot, as in I couldn't leave my hand on it. The front wheels were cool to the touch. I then went and felt the rear differential, it was pretty warm too, but I could leave my hand on it.

I've called some differential shops and an off-road shop and got some prices for replacing the 2 carrier bearings and 2 pinion bearings, as well as the seals. Pricing I'll list below.

$600 at AZ Differential Specialists (They rebuilt my brother's Jeep's front axle)
$800 at AZ Driveshaft (They rebalanced my driveshafts and replaced the U-Joints last year)
$630 at 4Wheel Parts
$550-$575 at Arizona Differential
$1,200-$1,300 at Jeep dealership

Any other types of shops you guys would recommend? Other off-road shops? Other types of automotive repair shops? I want a shop to do it since the backlash might change, I don't want to have to replace the gears.

Thanks. Video of noise below, I taped an old iPad to the hood and drove down the street at 15 mph, engine is off and transmission in neutral. That isn't tire noise or wind noise. Must be bearing noise.

Don't you dare pay those prices! I payed less than 200 for the dana turdy from CL, heck my 8.8 was An axle swap on this thing is more straight than a radiator change.

How long would this axle swap last?

I'd rather have fresh bearings.

I'm keeping the Jeep forever, as in, forever. I'll never sell it, it was my grandpa's. I've helped my brother pull his Dana 30 a couple times and I've swapped my Jeep's rear axle. I just had new bushings pressed into it a couple weeks for the control arms too.

I've got 145k miles on the Jeep, an axle swap would probably have as many miles on it with unknown bearings.

Yeah, but the heat is not from the bearings - maybe. It may be from the set-up. The ring and pinion could be to tight...

Sure, it could have bad bearings, but why? Have you drained the lube and pulled the cover to actually look?

I like that, now that's making it work! GoPro is out of business!

Forgot to update this thread, 2 weeks ago they finished the axle bearings for $619, quiet as a mouse now.
