Why can't we add our own Avatar?

I'm happy the way it is, but a compromise might be to allow financial supporters to choose their own avatar either within a preset list, or one of their own after approval of BITOG administration. That way, there's a lot less concern about policing avatar content, but a bit of creative freedom for those who provide support.

Bingo

I dont know where you guys go but Ive never seen that used as an avatar on a vehicle forum. With the exception of one particular 'rebellion' site formed due to a group feeling like the rules enforcement was a bit heavy handed on one of the sites I visit, so there...were no rules there essentially unless you [censored] off the owners/mods.
Its a dumb argument for the lack of avatars, cause its easy enough to enforce. You could make the argument that it might be around for a bit until a mod sees it, but some bot could come on here and dump 30 threads full of straight porn in the wee hours of the morning when there are none. Weve already had a bot not too long ago advertising false identities for sale. Those posts stayed for a hour or two.

Yes neither have I and if it was you'd have one less member quickly. The big issue just like editing your posts is someone loses too much control!

I agree. Not allowing something because of, what someone MIGHT do, has never been much of a convincing argument. Simply include the parameters of what is "postable" as an avatar, and what is not in the forum rules. Then, if someone violates those rules, it can be dealt with the same as any other forum rule violation. People tend to make mountains out of molehills with this type of stuff.

Avatars are just another thing that would need to be managed for policy compliance/decency/offensiveness, whatever you want to call it, which means it will take someone's time. This board operates on volunteer admins/moderators. We only have a few of them, and I would guess they already have their hands full as it is, so I'm not at all surprised that they are not jumping up and down with joy to add avatar management/moderation to their plate.

They monitor everyone's posts throughout the day for the same thing. The avatar is right next to every one of them. How would it take any more time?

Are you sure that's what they do? I thought they mainly investigate posts/responses that people report to them through the use of the "Notify" button.

Same deal. What's the difference? "They", (be it forum owners, administrators, moderators, or tattletale members), monitor anything and everything you write on this forum at some point. Perhaps not immediately, but in due time. If you post anything offensive, it will be removed. Just like most any other forum. The avatar is always going to be right next to anything you type, on every single post you make. If it's objectionable, they can kill it. I'm not seeing how any of this is, "added work" over what they are doing now.

Because now in addition to people reporting questionable content will also be reporting questionable avatars.

So what? The point is your avatar is going to be observed at the same time your post is. Every post, all the time. If there is an issue with it, they will resolve it. And it's not like forum members change their avatars with every post. It's not a big deal to have them. Especially on a forum that is as highly and heavily policed and moderated as this one is.

It's not about being observed. It's about being reported (by other members).

Honestly, being a member of many other forums where personal avatars are allowed, I really don't see any value in them, but I don't object to having them either.

Who needs an avatar when you can just put an image in every post?

Pretty much every forum that I've been on has the ability to automatically resize the avatar image.

Looks like the OP's three posts were all in this thread. And hasn't posted since 12/17. Maybe this was a deal breaker for him(or her).

The whole idea of a T-Rex on an oil forum was a bit odd to begin with.

Cajun whiskey, huh? Southern Comfort, maybe?
SS, I only drank alcohol for 1 year, 18-19 years old. I did try several whiskies. But, my hard liquor of choice was Jagermeister. I would buy the big bottle that came with the little shot glasses. But, I didn't need no "STEENKIN" shot glasses!

An avatar wouldn't be a bad thing. But, I like the site like it is; SIMPLE. And, I'm sure the MODS like it simple as well. Here's a little secret not many know; I'm a MOD on an online forum. Scary thought, huh?
