Low VOC deck stain recommendations.

You need to get all the old stuff off and get a clear or semitransparent stain. All paint and solid color stains will do what your deck is showing. I had all the decking replaced on my deck with PT and will seal it. Maybe clear oil based stain. Never ever paint or solid color stain.

With solid color stain, the same stain on the vertical posts, etc was fine, on the horizontal decking it was falling off.

So far, happy with the outcome and life. Also, good thing about it, next time power wash and just do some more flood. No need to scrap or clean anything.

They sell that in NH, and its only $18 a gal! Cheaper than the Olympic semi I was using. Maybe the tinted will be kinda close as a match

Based on what research I did, prep is key and it's all about prep.

And flood had many recommendations and positive reviews. Have a look here too: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/

Sand it, prep it with an oxygenated wood cleaner and brightener, and apply 2 coats of TWP 1500 Series Stain

There is what looks like a semi solid stain on that deck now, if you plan on applying a transparent deck stain all of that material has to be removed. Cabot, Benjamin Moore, and most of the major paint companies sell transparent oil base deck stains. If for any reason you can't remove 100% of the coating you can use a solid deck stain over that, it will be a coating that will need to be re-coated every year or two, if you're lucky and do a good prep job. Anything but a transparent oil based deck stain imo is a mistake. Keep in mind if the deck faces north and has tree covering, oil base stains are a breeding ground for mold and mildew. No worries about low VOC, I doubt you'll be able to find anything that isn't.

Everything else is anecdotal and has too many variables to even begin to comprehend.

Thanks. They seem to think highly of TWP. I went to the TWP website to see where I could buy it locally, and the first thing I notice is how similar the two sites look. I looked up the two domain names. The owners are hidden, but they share the same name servers... hmmmm...
