DV-30 = 5,175 cP
NOACK = 8.5%

Pluggging these numbers into the base-oil quality index (BOQI) formula:

BOQI = 45.5

This is a very mediocre BOQI for a synthetic. In comparison Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 has BOQI = 53.9 and Mobil 1 (vanilla) 5W-30 has BOQI = 50.3

List of oils by base-oil-quality index: a ranking

To make things worse, it has by far the worst A_Harman index among all Mobil 1 oils:

M1 A_Harman index

I hate giving bad reviews to oils, but, unless I'm missing something, Mobil 1 Advanced Protection (M1 AP) seems to be a marketing gimmick and a ripoff.

My recommendation: Don't buy unless you want to spend a lot more for a lot less. You're paying for the TV commercials.

It also looks like every time Mobil 1 introduce a new oil, the quality gets less.

Seems to have the add pack for a long run … but 20k ain’t in my future …

No, not really. The add pack is identical to that of M1 vanilla 5W-30:

Mobil 1 (M1) 5W-30 PQIA

M1 AP seems to have a thicker base oil though, hence the higher CCS and lower NOACK.

So, my guess is that it has less PAO and more Group III than Mobil 1 and the base oil is a little thicker. Which one is more suitable for longer runs? Mobil 1 (vanilla) of course, as it has a better base oil. Hence, this is why Mobil 1 Advanced Protection seems to be a marketing gimmick.

I'd buy M1 AP if I could believe Mobil's claims of better anti-oxidant performance. They say they can delay the onset of viscosity increase as oil ages, without incurring a lot of decomposition over time of all the key components in their oil. .... Maybe all their patents and employed PhD's are producing better chemicals to do this. As of now, if I wanted to pull out all the stops, I'd get the dexos1 Ravenol.

I doubt any use any mPAO.

M1 5W-30 VI = 170
M1 AP 5W-30 VI = 160

No, all M1 varieties go through the exact same engine testing.

My question was around engine testing … are you that used to spinning the narrative back to your test …?

I meant the tests and only tests that are done on an oil are the API/ACEA/OEM tests for the certifications in the PDS and they are the same for all M1 varieties (vanilla, EP, AP) since they have the exact same certifications. This is pretty straightforward in my opinion.

This said, M! AP 5W-30 seems to be full of VII but M1 AP 5W-20 seems to be virtually free of VII. It would be interesting to see the BOQI number for the M1 5W-20 grade. I would prefer M1 or M1 EP to the M1 AP for the 5W-30 grade though.

In any case people should buy and use whatever oil that makes them happy. Don't let my personal opinion or others' opinions influence your choice unless you specifically need my opinion or others' opinions.
