a few years ago i bought a husky 40 chainsaw at a garage sail for $20. took it home and it ran and died quickly. i figured out that it was the coil. got tired of messing with it so it sat.

i decided to try to fix and get a new coil. i don't want to throw $60-80 for a new husky coil. i can get a cheap chinese replacement for about $10.

the issue i am having is figuring out which coil to get. the ebay ones seem to list a coil for a husky 50 will work. but looking at the pix my coil has a extra wire .

So do i need the extra wire? it seems to be some kind of ground.

here is a ebay one . looks real close to mine

here is mine. will the ebay one work?

I see a wire in the eBay listing, is that not the same? Different connector, but probably the same?

Also, how did you determine the coil was bad? Did you confirm that the spark plug isn't sparking and that it isn't the spark plug that needs replacing?

the wire in the ebay goes on to the top tab. the yellow wire that goes into the winding is not there. not sure if the yellow wire is needed. it will start and run when dead cold. after a minute or so it dies and won't restart till its cold again. i checked for spark while warm and it has not.

i don't want to throw too much money at it as its just gonna sit

Hm, I see that you have a separate tab where the eBay model has the wire. Maybe like you said, it isn't needed as in, it will ground through the mounts?

Maybe grab this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/husqvarna-50-coil/162721260767?hash=item25e2f164df:g:H34AAOSwj99Z6-F5

Some of the Husky coils are rev-limiter coils. These are the ones that the saw modification groups discard. If I remember correctly, the black coils were non rev limited.

Just a friendly reminder when posting links that are a mile long.......
