The guy next door to me just bought a new F-150 with the smaller 2.7 Ecoboost motor. He wants to know what is a good solid 5w30 he should run? He will be towing his camper in the summer he says it's about 4,800 pounds loaded. He also wants to know how long should he run his oil between changes? I figured this is prob the best place to ask.

Any major brand that meets specs will run fine. There is no best, only brand loyalty or fanaticism. Definitely run a d1G2 oil.

Oci will depend on his driving habits and routine. 5k and 7.5k are good numbers. Start with 5k and watch for the fuel dilution.

Interesting owners manual. The vehicle is equipped with an oil life monitor OLM, so you can follow it for normal service. I agree with PIm Tac above. For severe service such as off roading or towing you should use 5,000 miles and for cruising around in the Sub Sahara you should use 3,000 miles ( seriously, it’s in the manual.) The manual does not discuss oil viscosity much, they just have an SPE 5w30 emblem shown and it is not specific to the engine so I guess all the engines take 5-30. No mention of 5-20.

Also there are some interesting comments on other issues on maintenance so make sure he reads the manual.

I never thought I'd live to see this day.

How far we have come....

I'd stick with Castrol full synthetic 5W-30 - it seems to hold up well in these engines.

Magnatec 5W30 has shown some good EB UOAs, plus it's only $17.88/5qt. jug @ WM-I would start with 5K, UOA it, and see if the fuel dilution & wear numbers would allow use up to OLM settings.

For towing the 4,800# monster, I'd say Redline 5W-30 and do a UOA at say 4,000 miles to see what's happening. Then go from there ...

My suspicion is that he has well over $30K into that truck (?), why even think $3 oil ...

That turbo is going to get a work out and the demands on the oil to transfer heat internally will be very high. It's about the energy density (lots of heat, small package), so anything he can do to make sure the oil is not breaking down will be a positive

Yes, the plain jane Mobil 1 5W-30 is not only Dexos 1 Gen 2 rated but is also A5/B5 with a viscosity of 11.00 @ 100*C and an HTHS of 3.1 . Plus the sulfated ash is .8. This is all good for a turbo DI engine.

Any oil that meets the Ford spec, with a license approved (which are many, including dino oils, believe it or not).

Follow the IOLM.

Anything else is just bench racing lubricants.

Have your neighbor read his owners manual. Use an oil with the specs that the owners manual recommend. It comes with 5W-20 semi syn. Castrol Magnetec or Valvoline full syn with max life tech are stellar performers. Any oil with the proper specs will be outstanding.

Mobil 1 AP is what I run in that same motor, mid saps and on the thick side, good cold numbers and meets fords specs.

I have used magnatec and ultra platinum in mine. I did a couple shorter changes at 5k but will go out to probably 8k this time based on my driving habits. The oem filter is pretty stout too. I posted a pic of it after 8k In the filter section. Easy oil change based on filter location and drain plug

The engine does not "need" a syn or semi-syn. It "needs" something that meets 946-A, to satisfy warranty compliance.
You can buy it for review here:

That's it in a nutshell.
Ford, Ford's spec, Ford's testing, Ford's Warranty, can't get any safer than that.

2.7's use 5W30. Ford recommends Motorcraft semi synthetic and a Motorcraft filter and that's what I use in mine. I have a friend that uses the same and his 2.7 currently has over 160,000 miles on it following change recommendations provided by the monitor. That works out to a change every 10,000 miles.
