lawn mower. The original spec was called Hytrans. I used some universal stuff from TSC. Not impressed with the performance. TIA

The old school units, where the hydrostatic drive and the rear diff have separate lubes, I've seen a single unit recommend anything from 20wt motor oil to ATF. Hytran, universal hydraulic fluid or what ever Tractor Supply or Walmart has on hand is what they normally run.

Today's unitized hydro drive transaxles need heavier motor oil.

JTK. A closer look at the parts diagram shows a hydrostatic unit integral to the final drive. They both spec Hy-Tran. There is no break down of the hydrostatic unit. Are they rebuild-able? This is an IH Cadet 80 lawnmower, not some MTD trading on the Cub Cadet mystique. Is there anything I can refresh inside it?

The two fluid are not even close in comparison.

Many years ago when drag racing 700HP cars with auto trans,

...we always used International Harvester Hy-Tran fluid.

Regular ATF in those days wouldn't stand up to the abuse.
