Could be legit. They have a computer virus that modifies the fan speed such that they can pick it up over an analog telephone microphone. Light is way, way easier.

The question which is not answered is how are multiple clients are being handled? Does each client get a different modulation frequency (or light color)? In theory, given that light and radio are just part of the broad spectrum of wavelength, theoretically this is possible. The news blurb unfortunately does not tell us which specific problem their innovation has solved for this technology to become commercially viable.
