Hello everybody,

Just wandering if anybody has any stories of letting other people drive your car/truck while riding with them.
My Aunt Linda drove my 1988 Daytona Shelby Z 2.2L Turbo 2 with the 5 speed once while I was a passenger. She would red line every gear for that good 20 mile drive -- made me cringe the whole time. Was out with my Sister one time at a back woods bar -- left her drive home because she only had 2 drinks -- she hit EVERY pot hole on the way home and then some -- I just cringed and shook my head the whole way home.

I dont think my butt can pucker any tighter when someone else is behind the wheel of my cars. Its almost better to not be a passenger when they drive.

Rt. 74 in northern New York State. Look on a map. From I-87 east to Ticonderoga....old, windy road which goes past 2 lakes.

Years ago they rebuilt it west to east. My brother was driving my car on the new part....straightened and smooth as velvet.

The new pavement stopped and the next section was torn down to mother earth and strewn with rocks; BIG rocks.

Why my brother didn't see-or feel-or HEAR- the need to slow down from 60 mph is beyond my comprehension.

Eh. It's just a car, and I have insurance.

Today i let my dad drive my Escort for the first time.
He revs it up way too much when accelerating from a stop because the clutch grabs quite high.
It makes me cringe because as most high mileage Ford CVH engines it has some valvetrain wear and the lifters rattle quite a lot at high revs and it sounds nasty.

"I have insurance" is a flame-able answer. A bit disturbing.

Is it "sorta like" a tough guy answer? As if to say, "You can't hurt me because I'm such a good capital manager"?

Therefore I can burn your house down and it's OK because you have insurance on that too?

It's good to be detached I suppose.

It is.
It lets you enjoy things in life vs. always worrying about the "what if's".
It's the reason why I still rent cars on trips as opposed to driving my own and risking stone chips, break downs etc.

No vehicle inspections here in my part of Arizona. Living in Texas I hated the mechanics’ test drive of my vehicles. And naturally, the space they pull it into to hook the car up to the state computer is just 2” wider than the car.....
And why do car inspectors have to be such idiots about the cars they’re inspecting? Here comes a detailed car that’s obviously loved and they have to drop the hood from 3’ above to close it, slam doors, drag the OBD cable across the paint, that sort of thing.
It may cost like the devil to license a car here in Az, but at least the vehicle is no longer in the hands of strangers - that in itself is worth the price of admission....

(snip)

It's just a car. I have insurance for catastrophies. It is, after all, why I pay for it.

So my sister takes a couple of miles off of my clutch... So what? She learned stick in a 911. So my mom doesn't miss every pothole - oh well. I'd never let someone overtly negligent or abusive drive my car. Accidents happen, and you cannot expect someone to treat your car as obsessively as you, especially if you do not communicate your expectations.

All the hand-wringing in this thread so far is just petty. It's just a car. They're made to survive potholes and rev higher than 2k.

I used to be wrapped pretty tight regarding care and worry about material things. That, too, can be exhausting and stressful to mental well being. When material possessions and having complete orderliness runs your life it is hard to enjoy life's pleasures. It's nice to be in the happy middle ground. Take pride and care for things, but not so much that it controls you. You guys know who I'm talking about. So much effort wasted on worrying about things that mean little to anything. Cherish your family, friendships, and passions.

The difficulty is that when you are one of "those" people, you think everyone else is wrong. I remember in my early twenties: I was babying my new Ford Escort and someone had the nerve to tell me that cars are just an appliance. Wash and wax?. Ha, never. No, cars are center of the universe, I thought. Never a fingerprint on the glass or dust on the paint.

(Almost) Old man advice and i'm stickin to it. And, not to be a hypocrite, I'm one of those guys who park away from others to avoid the buffoons that ding your doors up
