neighbors truck, 01 F350 2wd dually with the 7.3, 241k miles. He's never been one for meticulous maintenance, regular oil and fuel filter changes, tranny fluid change every 100k, but not much else. It hasnt given him a lot of trouble the past 17 years. Lately hes been recovering cypress logs out of the swamp, having them milled, and towing them to buyers. Due to all the weight hes been towing, I asked if he ever changed the oil in the rear end. He said no, I checked the level for him it was low, and had a ton of metal on the fill plug magnet. I added some oil, and we plan to clean it out and change it soon. From reading online and on Amsoils website, it shows the Dana 80 to take 75W90. I found that odd being the Sterling 10.5 in my F250 and most other ford trucks require 75W140. Should we stick with the 75W90 or step it up to 75W110 or 75W140? When the trailer is loaded down with logs it probably weighs around 9-10,000 pounds, and he towsno slower than 75-80 mph, no trailer he normally runs 80-85 when he can, the guy is always in a hurry, so I figured the rear end sees a good bit of heat. The truck doesnt live an easy life but it just keeps on ticking. Thanks for any suggestions.

I would not run a 75W90 in that beast. Thats me.

Years ago my friend bought a beat to heck 80's F350 single wheel 4x4, for like $300. We pulled the Dana 70 rear axle and sold it for $1250. And sold the Dana 60 front axle for $1000. And sold the engine and transmission for another $500. And the transfer case for another $200. Those axles retain their value. And then sold the scrap that was left to the scrap yard for $300.

I would think 75W140 would be fine. The Dana axles in those Fords all call for the 75W90. I can guarantee trucks have got 140 put in at my work since some of the other counter people don't read the charts.

Maybe try to convince your friend to look at a larger cover like a Mag Hytec.

I put 75w110 in my GMC's 14-bolt FF - that's what I'd put in it. IMHO the Amsoil is so superior to the lube that axle was designed to use and will live a long life on that the viscosity doesn't have to be overkill.

This is a table from the 2001 F-350 Fleet Manual. Perhaps the fleet manual is different. The table didn't transpose correctly but the manual says 75W-140 for the Dana 80.

The fleet manual is different, there are a lot of errors in it FWIW. They did not get their specs from the FSM that dealers use. A lot of times they will simplify listings in the fleet manuals.

Probably good enough to ahead with the 75W-140. Power on! I'll post the page. Had detail for the Dana 50, Dana 60, and Dana 80. I really can't defend this thing. Whatever!

Shop manual does not give an option for DRW or SRW for the Dana 80, only DRW. The only time they even mention DRW or SRW is with the Sterling axles. Now the Dana 135 takes 75W140.
