Must share this, was talking to a friend the other day and asked about his 09 Mazda3 that he purchased new. Mostly highway miles. Car is now at 220k and he confessed oil was changed once in last 115k some where around 50-60k miles ago. Always checked the oil and just last month had to add 1 quart for the first time! Never used synthetic. His reasoning was he never thought it would last much passed 100k so why waste money on oil. Now he's afraid to change it. I know him he's not a [censored]'r

I would really, really, really like to cut open and examine that oil filter.

There's no harm in changing it.

Even the cheapest API-SN one can buy ANYWHERE is better than what is in the sump now.

Change the filter, top up the oil, and ride it out.

Ask him to pull the valve cover and let you take a series of photos to post and put them here

Would be very interesting to see that valve train

Thermite grenade on the engine should do it. Put it out of its misery.

The TBN and TAN numbers would be very interesting to see for this oil.

He was probably like "It's a POS mazda who cares it'll be dead in no time" and now it's doing 115k OCIs and burning a quart every 60k? lol wut?
Is this even real? Did you find out which conventional is in there?

I would say nothing, if you say change it or don't change it, if anything goes wrong, you're the reason.
Stay far away from this one.
