Picked up a box of lawn mower filters at a yard sale this weekend. All appear to fit the Briggs/Kohler/Kawasaki engines popular on lawn and garden tractors. All are ~ 2.3 inches in height except the NAPA Gold 1056 is ~ 2.8 inches.

Observations:
1) The Briggs 696854 filter is made in India
2) The Kawasaki 49065-7007 filter is made in the USA appears to have a silicon ADBV and a baseplate common to Champion Labs filters.
3) WIX/NAPA 57035/1056 appear to be the same construction except for the height 2.3 vs 2.8.

I just run the Napa Gold 1348 (Wix 51348) automotive application OF on Kohler engine ride on. Silicone adbv and I find significantly less expensive the OPE filters. But, I have room for the ~.75" extra length over the 5/1056.

Good point on the extra length. My setup has a plastic shield that would cause the end of a ~ 3 inch filter to touch. Often thought of taking a hole saw to it and making room for a longer filter

Sorry but cannot answer the questions as to why filters designed for air cooled engines have an ADBV.

I have always used the very common 3614 type filter on these engines, the extra length makes it much easier to get a grip on the filter when changing, they are available anywhere and cost a fraction of what the standard filter costs.

I know local landscape companies that do the same.

I usually use the Napa Gold, but have the use the shorter one (like the Wix) on a few machines due to the longer filter not fitting. On my grandfather's Scag mower for example, the filter is right next to part of the frame. Using a longer filter is impossible since I can't even screw it on.

As the filters on lawn tractors and zero turn
mowers sit horizontally, a ADBV would reduce the
oil spill when removing them.

The Fram filter that crosses for Briggs and Kawasaki
mower engines is $4, but Wal-mart doesn't carry it
IN STORE. Has to be ordered on line from a secondary
supplier.

My 2¢

Just bought two Motorcraft FL-910S filters for my Briggs riders. I think the were $3.57 each at Walmart.

Just got some white can (Wix) ST3600 filters for $1.50 each at Maul-Mart...

5 inches long verses three and a half for the 3614...

Also a few ST8’s..

FYI, I had the opportunity to put my hands on and eyeball an ACDelco PF2210 and a Fram PH8172, both 2.7/2.8 inches in length. Both made in the USA and appear to be very similar in construction to the 2.3 inch Kawasaki filter (Champion Labs) minus the silicone ADBV.

Thought I would repost this list developed by Bill Kapaun back in the day.

Yep. Refer to good'ol Bill Kapauns's chart is my suggestion. That baby has gotten a LOT of use over the years here and elsewhere.

If I don't have a filter on hand, I'll usually run the largest/longest that will safely and effectively fit.

I currently have 3-4 "Champ" PF53 equivalents for my Craftsman rider with a 17.5hp Briggs that I bought off eBay cheap years ago.

If you cut open one of those ~2.3" OEM length filters, the media end caps take up most of the space inside the filter, offering only a little strip of media. I'm sure that little strip is fine for these tiny engines, but I like the extra oil holding capacity offered by a physically larger filter.

Just noticed I fat fingered the Fram listings, sorry Bill. They should be PHxxxx not PFxxxx
