So previously I have asked peoples opinions on the best 0w40 oil to use. I have found this stuff and found a video of it on youtube testing the wear protection. Compared to Castrol 0w40 it did really well. Does anyone on here use Motul 8100 X-Max? What do you guys think to this stuff?

Cheers

Looks good on a cold test as well coming 3rd out of the bunch

I used to use it in the Smart and Colt is in my signature, cause Motul is pretty cheap here, and although I didn't perform any analysis and this is only about my feelings, the engine is much smoother and quieter on Petronas Syntium 7000 0W40 than on Motul X-Max.

I'm currently using Shell Helix Ultra 0W40 cause I was able to get some very very cheap, but the engine is rougher than with the Motul, I plan to go back to the Petronas next OC.

I'm not really a fan of Motul (except the 300V and gear 300 series maybe), I am lucky enough to be able to buy their products at decent prices, but I think most of their regular lineup offering is just overpriced for what it gives.

But yes, for years I used the X-Max 0W40, before the Petronas was available, and I actually liked this one better (especially the new formula with "cooltech technology"). IMO the X-Max is a superior oil to the X-Cess 5W40 which is grossly overpriced compared to the Total Quartz 9000 Energy 5W40 for example (but this is OT).

If an oil does well in a test like this, that doesn't mean it'll work better in a real engine. Best to ignore this test and anything with a similar setup.

This one is slightly more meaningful, but not much. Oil doesn't just flow passively around the engine like that; it's actually [/i]pumped[/i]. That's why the W number (e.g. the 0W in 0W-40) is based on CCS and MRV tests rather than on something like this.

It's better to compare engine oils based on the specs they meet and the approvals they carry. X-Max 0W-40 carries an impressive list of approvals that cover a lot of very tough applications (e.g. Ford Focus RS, Porsche 911 Turbo, Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG, etc.). Impossible to say whether it's "better" than any other oil with the same approvals, but it's obviously good stuff.

skyactiv's question is important: what car is this for?

Hi there,

It's only for a 2l HDI engine from a Peugeot. I am really fond of the car and will be looking after it really well! So for the sake of any extra £6 every 6 months the best oil is perfectly viable for me

I am not sure. But I am sure whatever standard was around in 1999 has been significantly improved upon by now

If it’s a 90 or 110hp HDI, I guess the factory recommended oil was Total Quartz 7000 10W40, or some 5W30 for very cold weather.

I wouldn’t run Motul 0W40 in it, maybe more Total Quartz racing 10W50

More seriously, I would be cautious of fuel dilution, and run something with a narrower range

I’d say Total Quartz 9000 5W40 Energy (energy is important), which is a cheap 5W40 on the thick side.

But since you asked for the better 0W40, I guess the X-Max fits better than the Petronas for your car! Or go the 300V route.

Nice one thanks

I have never really seen an issue with fuel dilution. The oil level has never really moved on this car. I put 4.6l in and it stays exactly on the full line until the next Service! Must be a decent engine inside I would think!

Currently running helix ultra 5w40.

This engine is known for its durability. There are taxis with these engines running 450k miles still on the road

That’s good oil already! Total Quartz could possibly be quieter, although not by much.

Well, that’s still French stuff...although they do easily more than 250K with minimum care, so I guess with regular OC and everything, 400K+ might be doable

The previous 1,8TD were doing 4/500K pretty easily. 1,9TD not so much, although it depends on year. And of course it depends on your use
