On my 2013 Tacoma V6 4x4 there is a line that runs from the driver's side of the condenser to the AC compressor. Half of this line is aluminum, half is rubber, and the two parts are joined with a crimped coupling. Something neon GREEN and oily is leaking at the joint or coupling of this line. What am in for here in terms of difficulty and cost?

Yeah, it's leaking. What you see is tracer dye in the refrigerant oil.

You'd need a vacuum pump at a minimum to do it yourself, plus the receiver/dryer should be replaced whenever the system is opened. If you take it in you will have the cost of a new line, the receiver/dryer and a recharge. I have 609 certification and I do my own work, so I don't know what it costs to take it in. You might look up that line and the receiver/dryer on Rock Auto to get an idea of the cost, and call around for what an evacuation and recharge costs in your area. If both ends of the line are easy to reach the labor cost shouldn't be more than an hour.

5 years is pretty quick for the line to start leaking though. Too bad it isn't still under warranty.

Do they put dye in at the factory or has it been serviced before?

I know that GM has been using green dye for several years now in many of their vehicles from the factory. I imagine that Toyota and other manufacturers are also doing the same thing.

None of my cars had dye in the system from the factory, but that was a minimum of 18 years ago. Things may have changed since then.

Did any of them use R-134a? Back when R12 was used, the refrigerant oil was different.

Yeah they all are 134a from the factory believe it or not. I think the major transition came around 1992.
