First of all a little History:

ROKI Co., Ltd is a company based in Japan FKA Toyo Roki.

http://www.roki-jp.com/english/company_name.html

ROKI AMERICA Co., Ltd.is the US arm of Roki, FKA FILTECH, INC

http://www.roki-us.com/

HAMP is Honda AfterMarket Parts

http://www.honda.co.jp/auto-parts/hamp/

It is in Japanese, some attempted translations are here:

BIOTG_Hamp_oil_filter,_Made_in_USA

The 15400-PLM-A01 is the Roki/Filtech filter for the US market (also seen with the suffix “PE” for Power Equipment (allegedly))

The H1540-RTA-505 and H1540-RTA-515 are the HAMP “large” filters sold in other markets.

H1540-RTA-505b.jpg

The H1540-PFB-515 and H1540-PFB-525 are the HAMP “Small” or “Shortie” filters sold in other markets.

The A01 and 505/515 large appear to be the same filter aside from branding and color in the case of the 505.

The 525/515 small have a grey ADBV the 525 has a “6” on the tapping plate instead of the typically recognized <> seen on the A01 and 505. It is not known if this would hold true according to dates for all filters.

The change from Filtech to Roki took place in 2011, and the part number change for Hamp when filters changed from green to blue is Oct 2014 according to this thread.

9th Gen Civic . Com - FS: $20 MOD GB !! (HAMP Tokyo-Roki Oil Filter + Drain Plug)

The HAMP filters come in a box with a drain plug washer, The A01 comes in shrink wrap only and without a drain plug washer.

When I see the Hamp green filter for Honda it reminds me of river_rat Rob's 2009 testing of oil filters including the Hamp green and Honda A01. Looks like since his testing and dissections, the Hamp has added a silicone adbv but otherwise I suspect same construction, no endcap type.

Fortunately, unlike his bitog post Some Filtration Comparisons From the Bench, where his pics were wiped out by the photobucket moneygrab scam, his 'weebly' summary site pics remain intact. The Hamp and Honda A01 can be seen in the link by scrolling down to '..ten popular Honda/Acura filters'. Two middle filters.

https://filtrationcomparisons.weebly.com/test-pictures-and-results.html

Fwiw, his testing showed them to be the least efficient of the group tested. His 2009 testing came before the 2011 Amsoil ISO of some OEM oil filters including the Denso and Honda A01, and turned out to be predictive of the Amsoil ISO results. Unlike GMC Truck Central patch test linked here before, r_r's overall filtration efficiency results positively correlate with known/published ISO 4548-12 efficiency ratings at that time. His conclusions can be seen in the link.

You can get them all on Amazon:

Amazon Search 15400-PLM-A01

Amazon Search H1540-RTA-505

Amazon Search H1540-PFB-515

I’ve dealt with JP-Genuine and DC Autoparts for Honda filters and had good service.

A01’s can be bought from Honda dealers on occasion, HandA Accessories is one such dealer I have dealt with.

Though they are out of scope of the discussion at hand (ROKI) there are of course Honda A02 (Fram) which are readily available in the US and a Honda Purflux which are, I believe, prevalent in Europe and the UK.

It should be noted that the green HAMP filters have been superseded to the blue ones, you may get either color unless the seller specifically states it is one or the other. Likewise if buying from a Honda dealer and it is important to you that you get A01 filters make sure the dealer guarantees that is what you will get.

There are of course other sources on the internet.

Well, now that is the $64,000 question isn’t it, and one that is likely to be hard to answer with certainty, since a visual examination may not reveal any difference. The “large” HAMP and A01 are readily viewable cut open on the internet, they appear identical, it is my opinion that they probably are exactly the same filter save for graphics and paint. I can’t prove it, and the media could be different and still look the same. The “small” or “shortie” HAMP obviously differs in the grey vs red ADBV though it is still supposed to be silicone. There are some other claims about the “shortie” as well that folks have been arguing about for years, since the HAMP webpage is in Japanese it is hard to know the source of all of these claims.

Some examples:

HAMP (Honda After Market Parts) filters are a favourite of Honda owners and after customer requests, we now stock them. These filters are designed by Honda in order to give high quality long lasting oil filtration of engine oil, ensuring your oil is free from thickened lumps and/or oil debris. Hamp Synergy incorporates a dynamically adjusting release valve that adjusts to the surrounding conditions to keep oil flow and pressure constant and consistent.

These filters fit all Honda engines apart from the NSX, Insight and diesels.

This version is the sort after “Shortie”, it's known for increasing oil pressure by 3 to 4 psi, plus these are used by Japanese race teams such as spoon.... so you know these are going to be good!

This supplier should be much better for those living on the west coast. Shipping from CA to the east coast is costly.

Not sure, I got free shipping on a sale when I bought air filters. It may be the same cost if they use priority mail shipping. I just signed up for their newsletter to see if sometime they have the oil filters free shipping. Right now it would cost me $10 for 3, too much.

It looks like the baseplate on the Denso is about the same, or is the same, as on the two topic filters.

"Hamp Synergy incorporates a dynamically adjusting release valve that adjusts to the surrounding conditions to keep oil flow and pressure constant and consistent."

In other words, a normal bypass valve. Swore it was some high tech "smart valve" for a second.

They have some imaginative writers in the marketing department.

They are no endcap designs similar to what we have seen in Toyota Densos.

It is probably fair to surmise that the efficiency is similar.

Here are some seller images of HAMPs cut open.

I am not sure how we got on Densos, and am having difficulty finding the correct Denso for a Honda cut open (or good images of the baseplate) Denso and Roki are not the same company and there are clearly differences in construction at least between the Roki and Toyota Denso.

Denso and where to buy them really should be a topic for another day... perhaps someone would like to buy one and lets have a look at it...

"I am not sure how we got on Densos"

Because someone wants to say DENSO in all the threads but can't until 2019. Then after I took up the gavel for him, I noticed the non Toyota branded Denso in the picture had a baseplate that looks just like these you have shown. If the baseplates are the same either they use the same baseplate equipment, or they are made by the same company. That's all it is, nothing more.

Thanks for sharing that. Id prefer to see "potted" ends like the Mann cartridges, not just some glue. Bummer.

I will ave to look into what the end caps on the Fram Honda filters are like... Id think even a cardboard end cap would provide a little more substance to ensure strength.

Thanks also for the amazon links. For those prices (including for the Filtech Honda filters), Ill stick with Fram Ultra I think. And I do have a bag of Fram type Honda filters too. Think I have a Wix platinum on the accord right now too!

They are fairly expensive, though buying in quantity helps.

I’ve cut open a goodly number of Honda fitment filters, including A02 (both virgin and used) and they are all here.

These (particularly the A01) are considered the “good” Honda filters within the Honda community. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen one with a failure cut open (and the used A01 above has 10,000 miles on it). I also think “good" is a relative term and the “Honda community” is prone to hysteria, but that too is probably a topic for another day.

I’m going to have to take a closer look at the date codes, I notice the shortie date code appears to be etched or stamped, where as the other two are inked.

May I ask what evidence you have that they are A01’s made in Malaysia (beyond Union Sangyo using Honda Part#) because I’ve been unable to find a cut open of one that I can still see the internal pictures of.

Now, I feel the need to go on a minor rant here, it is not directed at only you either...

I do not understand how anyone took my original post as an invitation to turn this into a what filter I will use thread... Furthermore anyone who has been here a while or who bothered to look at my past post should pretty well figure out that I’m fairly well informed of the filters out there for Hondas.

I particularly find what amounts to “I’m too lazy to read your post, but I’m going to post a completely off topic reference to another filter” frustrating...

Anyway, feel free to cut open and post your favorites... I’ll be glad to drop by and post a one liner...
