And engine is? Year?
2018 EA888 in Europe is VW508.00/509.00 and 504.00/507.00.
Go on Mobil1.de web site and type in VW Tiguan with 2.0tsi engine.

Well, in the U.S. 2017 is VW502.00.
So, your theory how VW is testing this only in the U.S. is not really accurate. VW 508.00/509.00 is for all VW models around the world.
Now, would I use that oil in EA888, regardless of year? of course not.

Sure its vw502 because they dont want you to go on "long life" interval due to your sulphur levels in your gasoline...

Long life here means 30.000kms OCI with vw504/507

Fixed interval here is max 15.000kms with vw502/505.01 (507 for a DPF equiped diesel)

15,000 km is rather conservative as I'd seen impressive 10k miles UOA's with Total Ineo MC3 5W30 VW 502.00 505.01 C3 from States with BStone recommending 12k miles.

Even though I have a sticker under hood that threatens death if an oil other than 508 is used, I think I may go with. 504 oil, or at least a lower ash 502/505.01. I’m thinking M1 esp, total quartz mc 3, or total quartz Long life. Any other suggestions are appreciated.

That is only VW thing and they already burned themselves once. But VW never gives up when it comes to oil stupidity. When one thinks they cannot outdo themselves, they prove us wrong.
How is long drain possible with VW504.00/507.00 with low SAPS oil while short drain is VW 502.00 with full SAPS spec.
My point is: this is not experiment in the U.S. Your VW dealer in Slovenia is stacking VW508.00/509.00 for 2018 models too.

Get Mobil1 5W30 ESP.
If you want bit heavier oil, get Valvoline 5W40 MST. NPAP has it regularly on sale for $5 per quart and has SAPS level at 0.76 and carries slew of approvals.
M1 5W30 ESP so far the cheapest I found is on ecstuning.com for $8 per liter.

VW 502.00 505.00 may be full SaPS, typically in A3B4.
VW 502.00 505.01 may be mid SaPS, typically in C3.
Variations ..... there is .

Well yeah, but VW502.00 is pretty unremarkable specification. VW508.00/509.00 is rally unremarkable comparing it to MB229.71

With more and more restrictions in EU towards diesel cars every day...

The more I understand that "CAFE" alike nonsense with thinner oils...its somehow the last effort to keep diesel cars alive...for a while...

In meantime german car manufacturers will try to find a solution how to switch towards hybrids or electric car

With other words...german car industry is too big to fail (or to be punished)

Until we know exactly what’s in vw 508 oils and what the true specs are, it’s hard to say it’s unremarkable.

Can you outline by what measure the 229.71 is remarkable compared to VW 508 00/509 00?

I already posted lubrizol chart tool few pages back.
You can compare both specifications very easily. However, this is third time I am mentioning that I POSTED lubrizol chart and it seems that some here expect that someone write full details for them.
You could Google lubrizol tool easily. Still, I posted it here, and apparently it is not enough.

We know, now why you do not know is good question since I posted Lubrizol chart as answer to your post. Why you did not click and check it is beyond my understanding.
