Vehicle is 2005 Chevy Trail Blazer with the former, in great shape 4.2 L I-6 cylinder engine with 7 qrt. sump : I use a variety of synthetic 5W30 oils (mainly PP and M1) for an OCI indicated by the GM oil monitor with good results - I could even probably go longer with the 7 qrt. sump and same synthetic oil ... My potential concern is I am using Castrol Edge 5W30 synthetic for the first time - after only a few thousand miles into the OCI the oil is almost black (and that is with a Fram Ultra oil filter) . Is this a normal occurrence with Castrol Synthetic oils ? This vehicle is run with all highway miles and I don't see oil this dark until the end of a normal OCI using PP , M1 or even Super Tech SN rated synthetic oils ... Your thoughts ?

People will tell you the color of the oil makes no difference. Different formulations can affect color. I prefer my oil dark to black. It makes me think it is doing its job.

Of the oils that you mentioned, Castrol EDGE Syn has more(waaaay more) Magnesium compared to the others you listed. Most conventional oils only have Calcium and little if any Magnesium. Most synthetic oil have a combo of Cal/Mag. Castrol has a ton of Magnesium and less Calcium. Maybe this is why? IDK!
Or, it could be the way the DYE in the oil darkens compared to what you've been using. Again, IDK!

I don't know it the link will work however, if you look up the info in the PQIA site you will see what I am talking about. SuperTech Syn isn't listed but the ST conventional is.

Could be this oil is just "cleaning" up a bit from other oils. Or it is interacting with the old oil left behind from the previous run. Either way I would say it is just fine. Carry on like you would normally do.

Has a side note... The first time I put Motorcraft in my lady's Camry there was quite the interaction between the Motorcraft and what had been in there before. The oil had a rather reddish Amber color too it. I had never seen that before or since. I just thought it was a interaction between the old oil that had been in there and the new Motorcraft. I had never seen oil look red before. It was kinda wild. But the car ran great with the Motorcraft.

Moly content brings red. Could be other additives I'm not aware of that shows red.

Thanks for that link. I've never found a way to search their site. If you or others know of a similar searchable summary for the HDEO / diesel oils please post it. I would like to see what they are showing if they have tested some of the Rotella's.

Just changed 2013 Pentastar at 3k since the oil was already dark black and goo on dipstick/fill spout (5w20 Magnatec) set up for dealer to check since still under warranty
5w20 looked thick yet smelled of fuel
