Is amazon winning the online wars with the parts stores. Looking at autozone web page I donít see the 20% off 125 and if I search Iím seeing mostly in store coupons online only 10% ? Same with advanced I donít see the 30% off and O Reilly not as bad but last week 25 % off 100 this week 10% off 100 but you get a $!0 gift card. Do you think online not a money maker anymore or can it be the time of the year.

I'm not an expert. But, prices fluctuate with demand and yes time of year dependent. Just an observation. I'm a very big amazon fan, but I've noticed that their prices can be over inflated. Definitely price shop. Sometimes Mitsu OEM are cheaper than big name brands. Again, it varies.

water pump ($45)

Cheaper than the dealer down here

For some things. I need a transfer case motor for my avalanche. I can buy it for less on amazon, but napa has it for $300, but a lifetime warranty. I can just walk in a get another. So for higher ticket parts, i go local.

You have to be very careful using Amazon. They usually never offer the best price they just match someone else's price unless they beat the best price I can find by at least a dollar I go with the price of the other people their matching. I got a good buy from them on some filters last spring for $5.95 each now those are listed for $12.90 I can get them at Fred Meyer for $6.70.

For me, rarely. They did let me order a $42 wheel bearing on Friday and deliver it on Sunday, so I could put it in over my weekend.

Parts stores were $80+, ebay was $25 and wait ten days for delivery.

Amazon offends me in that I don't think they give me the same price as they give other shoppers. When it's right, I pounce, but this is more often true for maintenance items like filters or wiper blades than it is for emergent parts.

For ordering parts it is usually between Amazon, Rock Auto, and Summit Racing. Parts stores in emergencies and Wal-Mart for stocking up on oil and other fluids/chemicals.

The parts stores are usually a big let down. I don't know how they stay in business. I tried to go to an Auto Zone around 8:30 AM on my way to work last week, and there was a sign on the door "back in 15 minutes". What? I wonder if the district manager knows about that. A week earlier, I walked into an Auto Zone and asked for a differential cover gasket for a 8.5" 10 bolt GM, probably one of the most common rear ends in the world. I'm sorry I didn't have the Fel-Pro p/n memorized. All I got was a dumb look and "uh ... what vehicle is it for?". After following their computer's questionnaire, they didn't even have the gasket in stock! So I bought a tube of RTV. Whatever.

I can get a water pump TODAY. Amazon cannot do that. I also open the box and make sure the gasket surfaces are not dinged, again Amazon cannot do that.


Also Amazon parts if you put them in your list, you will see that they go up and down.

My local parts stores rarely have parts in stock for my vehicles except for some basic maintenance parts. They can order it... but so can I and it comes directly to my door. The difference is if I want to pick it up tomorrow or wait 2 days, and if it's special order then I pay shipping to the local store anyway. My local NAPA is often double the price of Amazon or Rock Auto for the same parts.

Parts that may be worth warrantying may be worth buying local, I do factor that into the decision.


You get what you pay for...
So keep in mind how much you paid for this advice.

Different strokes for different folks.

I personally wouldn't want to install a store brand WP nor would I want to pay the dealer convenience prices.

I'm tired of the games Amazon plays with their pricing. Parts searchability for my BMW is a joke - search for wheel bearings and you'll get brakes and light bulbs. For big projects I still use specialist sites like FCPeuro and ECS tuning or Pelican Parts. Their prices are competitive and their selection is comprehensive. For small, immediate things believe it or not but the dealership can be decent.

Amazon doesn't have a storefront for parts like worldpac, pelican, fcp, bernardi, etc.

Searching at Napa, AZ, AAP, etc doesn't always do a lot for me. It's easy to get generic and unrelated stuff.

It's always worth it to shop around. I did buy an alternator from Amazon, also some wipers and similar stuff. But really not much as far as parts go.

The prime concept could be decent for a shade tree who can accept getting something tomorrow, and using a nicer return policy than most places have. But their store front needs a LOT of work imo.

Get your part numbers on Rockauto, then search on eBay and Amazon...for your non-critical items.
Prices are all over the map these days.
I'm lucky because the O'Reilly warehouse is right next to their retail store here so if I need something fast the store will give you a will call slip, but they're not very good on pricing.

I refuse to spend $100 a year on Amazon Prime, it's too hard to earn it back in savings

Having said that, Prime members A B S O L U T E L Y get better prices than non-prime members!
