Hi all,

I have a straight 50 mineral oil which currently has approx 800ppm Zinc and wish to increase this level to 1500ppm could one of you guys help with how much is required please to achieve the desired amount?

I have a ZDDP additive which contains the following data:

Density @ 20 Deg C : 1115
Viscosity @ 40 Deg C : 211
Viscosity @ 100 Deg C : 12.9

Zinc Characteristics by Weight : 8.0% Minimum / 9.0% Typical / 10.5% Maximum
The recommended treat rate is 0.5% to 2.1% by weight.

I would appreciate it if someone could assist in calculating how much additive I need to add to the Straight 50.
Extra Kudos for showing your workings

If any other info is required for the SAE50 or Additive please let me know!!

Thank you!!!!

OK so 100 ppm (parts per million) = 0.01 %

Your oil has 800 ppm or 0.08% ZDDP. Lets ignore for the minute if you are talking actual Phos or Zinc, they track together and are close enough for a rough calculation.

Your zinc add has, on average, 9% or 90,000 ppm ZDDP.

So mixing up 1 Litre let's use:
990ml of 800 ppm oil = 0.99 x 800 = 792 ppm
10ml of 90000 ppm add = 0.01 x 90000 = 900 ppm
Therefore total ZDDP for 1L = 792 + 900 = 1692 ppm. This is a dose of 1% by volume.
This will do me, as you are never too sure of the actual strength of the oil and zinc add anyway.

But if you want it a little closer:
992 ml of 800 ppm oil = 0.992 x 800 = 794
8 ml of 90000 ppm add = 0.008 x 90000 = 720
Total ZDDP for 1L = 794 + 720 = 1514 ppm

Scale up as required. And give the ZDDP add a good shake.

SR5 thank you for your time and informative reply, very much appreciated!
