I have access to a wholesale oil distributor and they have provided me with 2 choices for Dexos1 gen2 approved oils: Service Pro and Kendall GT-1.

The price difference between the two is about $1/qt; Kendall is $1/qt (40%) more than the ServicePro.

Since both products are licensed by GM for the Dexos1 gen2 specification, I would expect both products to be equally capable of long(er) drains (7500-10K miles). To date, I have not had a customer request a specific brand of engine oil. Kendall does not appear to be a top-tier brand, so I am not sure if spending the extra 40% is justified.

What do you guys think?

There isn't much info there on the Service Pro oil and that makes it harder to compare, but I like that the Kendall 5W30 has the HTO-06 spec...even though that should probably be considered obsolete now. Probably not worth paying 40% more for it, though. I'm sure they are both very serviceable oils.

I'd run the service pro with no problems based on that information and much better price point.

yup

I just changed the oil in my 2014 Sierra with Kendall GT-1 full synthetic 5W30, the non-Dexos bottle. I felt comfortable doing this because I do 5K OCI's and because of this:

"GT-1 Full Synthetic with Liquid Titanium exceeds new car warranty requirements as defined by ILSAC GF-5. It is “Resource Conserving” for improved fuel economy, protection of emissions system catalysts and turbochargers, and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85. The SAE 5W-30 grade also is suitable for use in GM vehicles where the OEM specifies dexos1™ quality oil".

This came from Kendall themselves.

Dexos means noting to me I don't have one of their CAFE engineered messes with LSPI!

Yes, the Titanium was what made Kendall GT-1 special. The dexos1 Gen2 Kendall (no Ti) isn't worth the extra money over ServicePro dexos1 Gen2, as there is no evidence or reason to think it is.

You're missing the main point with dexos1 oils. Its a tougher spec than plain old SN/GF5 oil. See the comparison chart below:

Add to that the new dexos1 Gen2 timing chain wear tests (SN/GF5 doesn't have that) and GMOD tests.

In this comparison, I'd go with ServicePro.
