Hello!

I have 2012 Suzuki Swift Sport (american Suzukis 6 speed manuals are same)

I changed my gearbox oil because, Suzuki dealer had put normal Mobil 75w-90 GL4/GL5. Yes in here, Suzuki dealer doesnt use Suzuki oils (75w-80). Just brand that gives more money to them....
But Mobil makes my first gear changes in cold, very very hard and makes some crunch sounds. This Getrag 6 speed manual box is famous for this, so its not broken or anything.

But when i changed my oils to AMSoil MTG 75w-90 it was super. Everything feel better and better, but in 2 months, my gearbox makes bit whining noise on 2nd and 3rd gear (on acceleration and deacceleration).
Its not super bad sound, but can it be just oil problem?

I asked european Suzuki forum and even my dealer and nobody have repaired or changed gearbox.
This car have now 61 000miles, and had gearbox oil changes by dealer at 30 000miles, 60 000miles... And with by me at about 60 000miles. No metal or anything with old oils.

Just thinking is there alternative gearbox oil that works in cold (freezing temps here)? Or am i going to repair soon first Suzuki box in Europe?

AMSoil is so new thing here that i cant say anything about it, can you guys?

Thanks much, and im sorry that English is not my first language! smile

From what I know,it specs anything from 75W80-75W90 GL4. Try Redline MT90 and see if it's better,or maybe try to get ahold of some Suzuki OEM fliud. Some gearboxes can be finicky.

Redline site says MTL (for 75W-80) and for Suzuki's, you mean MTL?

This box (or Suzukis infos) are bit weird. "Use like almost anything GL4" but keep in secret that 1st and 2nd gear uses triple cone syncros, that need MTL type oils.

I can be wrong too, but i think this box is pretty close with Focus ST170 (europe 2.0 + 6 speed), Mini Cooper 6 speed and other FWD Getrags... Maybe. smile

We have a lot of the Swift sports here en Denmark. And it is rather common that they start whining a bit from the main axle bearings. Or more often. The reverse gearís gear.

Use the specified 75-80. And use a gl4. Not gl4/gl5. Some times they make the gears crunch because they a too slippery to let the syncros brake probertly.

I think the Suzuki fluid or Redline fluid would be way to go.

Thanks much for answers!

So 75w-90 (mt90) or mtl (75w-80 what suzuki wants)?

I dont know why but Suzuki wants 75w-80 only for this box. Other Suzuki boxes uses 75w-90.

For shDK, are there any bearings changed or is this just small noise and nothing to worry about?

Without being there and hearing the noise, it is hard to say. If the gearbox shifts well cold and hot, then the viscosity should be ok for your conditions, and I can say from experience that the MTG product is a quality fluid. I just have no experience with it in super cold ambient temps.

Also, If you have whining in 2nd and third gears, but no whining in the direct gear (4th?) where the power goes straight through the gearbox, rather than via the countershaft, then you could have a noisy input shaft or other bearing, which sees no real loads in the direct gear.

Its little stiff at cold. Maybe i try that 75w-80.

Yes small whining at 2nd and 3rd. Im not sure about 1st. And im not sure about is straight 4th or 5th.

If oil change doesnt do anything its bearing problem... frown

If it is the reverse gear whining.. then it can often run for a long time without getting worse. If it is the bearings they will need change. It is however a pretty easy gearbox to work on. And surely is much less expensive then a new gearbox.

If it is a 5 speed, then most likely, 4th is the gear with your power flow straight through the input shaft and directly to the output shaft, meaning this gear will have the least noise if you have a noisy input shaft bearing.

Yes, in your climate, a slightly lower viscosity might work better overall.

Its 6 speed. I looked that i can get used gearboxes reasonable prices. Not im here, but like Germany.

If it goes worse i buy another and repair old one with lsd. (its my daily driven so this is easyest solution to me, and suzuki spare parts takes time to get here...)

Yes it sound like lower reverse gear whine (not so loud yet).

I am pretty certain you can just get the bearing number off the old bearings, and order them at any bearing supplier. There is no need to use oem Suzuki bearings. Any quality bearing like INA or SKF would be fine.

Yes i know. But if i remove gearbox i cant drive work... smile

But i put today redline mtl (70w80) and gearbox feels super. Much better than mobil or amsoil 75w-90.

Even whining is almost unhearable in 3rd. 2nd is like 30% more quiet now.
Sound is now like any fwd gearbox, or better than some, lol. (i drove 60 000km and 4 year old Focus and that whined like crazy)

But we will see. I got couple pictures of amsoil (it was 2000miles). Looks clear like new.
