So I've got a 05 Cavalier with the 2.2 Ecotec. It began ticking. I changed the oil, 5w30, and it still ticked. Read about the timing chain tensioner issue and changed it, still ticks. Replaced all the guides on timing chain, tensioner, balance chain, guides, and tensioners. It is still ticking. The engine rotates smoothly by hand.

I need help, advice, suggestions. Has anyone ran into this on an ecotec before?

When they tick, it is usually a lifter/lash adjuster.
A timing chain will usually be more of a slapping or rattling sound.

The Ecotec in my 03 Cavalier ticked a little when I first got it, It quieted down after about 5000 miles on synthetic oil (Amsoil Signature)
I think it just had some sludge or varnish in a lifter that the synthetic oil cleaned out.

A friend had some luck with BG MOA in his Ecotech as well.

This is a case where an additive just might help but before going route take it one the highway drop a gear if need be and run it a 4K RPM for 5 min.
If that doesn't help then try Rislone concentrate in the oil for a full OCI. If still no joy try a 10 minute Berrymans Chemtool idle only flush in the oil at the next oil change. After that change the lifter/lash adjuster or live with it.

A note about Chemtool. It list it now as a carb and fuel system cleaner, it was previously listed for oil flush and is still the same formula. It was and remains a idle only product for10-15 min right before an oil change. Used this way it is safe but driving the car could damage the engine which some people did so they stopped recommending it for this.
