IDK what to call it, but when you twist the handle it acts like a right angle drive and lets you spin stuff in in tight spaces. The accessories are stupid junk but the ratchet's actually pretty cool. cool

I got one a couple years ago as a present.
You are right that the sockets are not good i.e. JUNK.
Use them on a nut or bolt you intend to trash as it chews them up.
The ratchet is handy in tight places.

I bought a Stanley ratchet with a twist action several years ago from a Sears store. I don't now how, but whichever way I twist the handle the drive rotates in the same direction.
I think it cost around $27. Facom sell a similar tool in the UK, but for about 50 ($80 at current exchange rates).

Really helpful with limited access fasteners.

I bought a set the last time they were on sale.

The bad: It's pretty horrible as a rotating tool, with big dead spots in the turning, lots of slop and bad feedback.

The good: It's actually functional as a right-angle driver. Just like a pass-through ratchet, I don't need that magic very often, but every once in a while it's exactly the right tool. And it's good as a medium-coarse tooth extending ratchet. Other than the slightly larger head, there isn't any downside to the rotating handle feature if you don't use it.

I don't like splined sockets, since they mangle the plating and surface finish. I've tossed them in the back of the drawer for when I need to hammer one onto a rounded fastener head. But the hex adapter is nice.

I have a few of those. Let me tell you, they will take serious torque. I bent a pipe on mine years ago, and it's still going. Not a junky ratchet at all.
