A friend changed his differential gear oil in his Toyota HiLux. It called for GL-5 but he found himself in a pinch with not enough GL-5 to fill up with. So he put in 0.8 liter of GL-4 he had lying around to make up the difference. This was about 20% of the total gear oil volume he put in. Is he good? He uses the pickup only for mild to moderate load use.

Good enough? Probably.

Would it be good enough for me? Absolutely not.

I wouldn't worry if both were 8xW90 or monograde.
I would be worried if they are 75W90.

Not sure about the GL-4 viscosity but the GL-5 was 80W-90 (what the owner's manual spec'ed).

With minimum 80% being of GL5 80W90 viscosity grade, I would speculate that should be good for your friend's application.
