Depends on perspective... misinformation like that is actually slightly distressing.

It's one of the reasons I refuse to hang out with "Car guys" anymore.

No they do not. From Subaru's owners manual "You should use synthetic engine oil that
meets the same requirements given for
conventional engine oil. When using
synthetic oil, you must use oil of the same
classification, viscosity and grade shown
in this Owner’s Manual. Refer to “Engine
oil” F12-4. Also, you must follow the oil
and filter changing intervals shown in the
Warranty and Maintenance booklet.".
No where does it state requirement.

You must have issue's because your owner's manual states the same as my previous post. Because it was provided by Subaru.

Then why would I want to nauseate myself further?

Anyway, they lost me at "BETTER FUEL ECONOMY FROM SYNETHETIC OIL?" If they can't spell it......

You're wrong 2X.
Newer Subaru OMs state that synthetic oil is required as is the case with our '17.
You must be relying upon an older OM, like that for our '09.

Required for optimum performance, not for warranty. You can use conventional.

How can that Subaru speak be interpreted as “required” with no other option? Come on people, read the words using common sense.

This is correct All 2017 Subaru Require synthetic

If you would like I can take picture of it and post it. It says in the maintenance booklet that all 2017 models require Synthetic oil.

Thanks for sharing. Its the additive choice that makes a good oil.Look at PYB,conventional but stellar parts. I'll stick to Grp III + Pennzoil Ultra Platinum.

So you have engines in your Subaru’s that are rated for 150-170hp, are naturally aspirated, larger displacement at 2.5 liters and require synthetic. You guys better never make fun of us German car owners and our oil requirements. I get the requirement of synthetic for the turbo 2 liters, but your hp per liter on the na engines is on par with my 2000 Accord @ 200hp from 3liters. That thing ran on whatever 5w-30 sourced. Not certain where the progress is on Subaru’s Powertrain or perhaps modern Powertrain choices all together.

Another 6 of 1, half dozen of another, article about syn vs conventional.Rehashed hash x 100 basically. Nothing wrong with either synthetic or conventional as using either type works well and millions of engines go well over 300K to a million miles on either and it basically boils down to whatever ones personal preference is. Interesting read though, thanks for posting the link.

Who here recently posted about M1 0w40 not being a real synthetic?
