So friend have a problem with 97 LC with 280k km. Truck was bought only few days back, in good general condition, original mileage (confirmed by our reg department). Lift kit, snorkel, big tyres, winch. All new equipment, never used, guy sold the truck because of newborn on the way.

Couple of days in friend's ownership truck suddenly lost power, CEL is on, very noisy( he said top end, but I haven't heard it personally), lot of smoke. Noise starts few moments after startup. My guess is either failing injector or timing off but these engines are really unknown over here.

Any ideas lads down under? Anything specific?

A google search quickly reveals some lamentations about the head of the KZ. Toyota's recent diesels have been pretty substandard and problematic, which is surprising given the 'legendary' vehicles they're installed into. It's relative, the KD engine, are well known for regular injector/seal failures and blown engines as a result. Check oil for dilution, are the injectors leaking? Retrieve that code first. I'd bet it's injector seals, though.
As per one Toyota enthusiast "With regards to the seals. the main issue was that the copper washer was too thick and that usually the heat generated was too much for the malleable + thick washer causing it to leak. Normally people start experiencing issues after a big day out on the beach or toeing a big trailer..." followed by recommendation to change injector seals every 20K, and the revised seals every 40K. While it doesn't sound like it immediately, the KZ's are also known to crack heads due to (surprise surprise) improper thermal management in the head...

Scambling for solutions is a hopelessly futile endeavour and potentially dangerous, without first coming to a solid, personal understanding of the problem. Beware riding the ideological hobby horse.

Hope that your friend has not blown engine head!

http://neuralfibre.com/paul/4wd/tuning-and-understanding-your-toyota-viscous-fan-clutch

You can easily get 50ml 10000cst silicone oil in any hobby store wink

I am still searching for those resistors! They are pretty uncommon...

And yes... Ours had the same issue @300kkms...with a previous owner...heads crack at around those kilometers 250-300...I would say "but only if cooling system is/was neglected"...

So look after: cooler...flush it every 2-5yrs when you change your antifreeze....76C or even 70C thermostate (from LC120)instead of standard one with 82C....refurbish your viscous fan with new oil...alternatively put bigger exaust pipes to help cool down the engine

Please SS, dont take my posts personally, just because you drive/like Toyotas. I'm not trying to offend anyone, just trying to offer some much needed balance of perspective when I can. Objectively, we know new Toyota Diesels have major problems, pretending they don't doesn't help anybody. I hope you enjoy your cars and I bet you'll get great service from them.

''Legendary'' Toyota for sure, these things crack heads when the sun goes behind a cloud. Put whatever oil you like in them, but be fanatical about the cooling system. Check for a headgasket - geyser from the filler cap first. Leaking injector seals is a common rail problem, the old indirect injection engines don't really do that. That should have an electronic injector pump, so hard to get the timing wrong...these will just have a plug on top of the pump. If it has a diaphragm and lever on the pump you can set the timing with a dial gauge in the centre of the distributor head, special tool needed really, if it has a cold start device you'll need a 10mm spacer to bypass that. Otherwise injectors - they can make smoke, they can also cause knocking. What colour smoke ? White smoke is retarded timing or glow plugs, black smoke advanced, over fueling from bad injectors. Not in intake blocker, but check that, bypass the EGR, check airfilter etc.

1987 BMW R65 - Aegis SAE30
2005 Nissan Expert - Gulf Western 10W-40
1996 Volvo T5 - Penrite HPR15 - 15W-60. Ryco syntec filter.

P.S.: and dont forget to inspect/change a radiator cap.....I think its 0,9kPa
