Trav, can’t find the post but I believe you once said you would only use a split beam torque wrench. What brand do you like? I am considering CDI or Precision Imstruments.

Both of those are excellent tools buy the one that fits your needs as far as scale and budget goes. I use Stahlwille Manoskop but wouldn't pay US prices for them.
Amazon.de will ship this one for example to the USA and doesn't charge MwSt (German sales tax) so it will probably be less than $200. You add the attachments you want/need for $50 for the ratchet end, if you are interested in a Manoscop let me know, I can put one together to order for you.

Thanks Trav for the offers but this looks a little too complicated for me plus wonder about service and warranty support.

PS Wonder why this thread has such small font?

I can understand that with the warranty. Just for information, what I like about that system is you can put any size drive ratchet you want on the end and use open end and box pieces without compensating for a crows foot.
If you don't need these features its sort of a waste. Buy either of the two brands you mention, both are very good.

Interesting, I was looking for a new torque wrench just yesterday. I had also decided that my next one would be a split beam model, and similarly, my needs are in the 70-80 ft-lb range (for lug nuts).

The 3/8" Precision Instruments model is a little less expensive than the 1/2" and goes up to 100 ft-lbs, which would work for us.

I have no doubt the 1/2" model (22") would work, but my old spring type 1/2" torque wrench (20") was occasionally longer than I needed (bumping into bodywork while torquing), and thus a little unwieldy. The 3/8" is almost perfect at 17" long, except for the 3/8" drive over the 1/2" drive, which a simple adapter would fix. However, I would get the flex ratchet head if I were to get the 1/2" split beam model, so the size may not be an issue.

How did you do that? Every once in a while I would like to change the display name of a url link. I look up instructions and find them unintelligible and just say forget it...not worth the effort. Even if I learned how, I will forget how to do it by the time I want to do it again.

There's not too much to it, when you want to insert a link, click the icon (
hyperlink.gif
) and paste the URL there, then type in the text in the second box. Don't just copy/paste the URL into the text box.

In Merkava's defence: the man confessed a few times in past that he has some problems and it's not easy to live in his walking torture chamber. Just in case anybody missed that and wonders why he sounds so annoyingly out of place sometimes.
