2002 Toyota 4runner

Hello friends,

Back again for more advice. Helping my brother chnage the oil on his vehicle soon and he has no idea what’s the correct oil to use. Luckily he has been using the correct viscosity, but buys whatever is cheapest. Can’t blame him for that. So , with that being said what oil do you guys recommend for the following application.

2002 Toyota 4 runner SR5
3.4 V6 165k miles
OCI ~ 7k. Daily driver :20 miles daily
Chicago Illinois

I don't think Toyota has a spec beyond whatever API was current, and 5w-30. I don't even think is spec's a synthetic.

So whatever is good for the goose.

I like pennzoil for purely marketing reasons.

Maybe a 0w for the cold winters? Is it 20 miles of in city driving?

The 5VZ-FE is durable engine. Keep up on maintenance, and they can run for longer than most people will want to own them. Any reputable 5w30 is fine.

The biggest concern on the 3rd gen 4Runner, are the lower ball joints. They are mounted in tension, and after many years of use can fail with bad consequences. I have yet to see an aftermarket LBJ that is made is well as the OEM LBJ's. So my advice is to check them and if questionable, replace them with OEM LBJ's only. In fact, at that mileage I'd replace them regardless.

Penzoil has mail in rebates right now. Mobil also runs rebates a couple times a year

That engine doesn't need anything fancy as long as the oil is changed at a reasonable interval. Use a Fram tough guard or Fram ultra oil filter.

If it was mine I'd go with M1 HM 10w-30

Concur with all the previous 5w30 suggestions. The 5VZ is neither picky about nor hard on oil. A 5w oil is more than sufficient for winters in Chicago and arguably anywhere in the continental US. A 0w is not required for what he's doing. A good friend of mine back in Detroit has a 96 4Runner with the same engine that he uses for his courier service he does 10k oil changes with a filter every other change using Super Tech 5w30, last time I was home he had over 600,000 miles on the engine. The only thing he's ever done to it is tune ups valve cover gaskets and timing components. My personal choice would be Valvoline Max Life 5w30, red bottle.
