On my winter beater, I have some cheapo Canadian Tire (Globebox brand) universal fit "PVC" seat covers that I installed half a year ago just to protect the seats and make them easy to clean. One of the covers just started cracking so I replaced it under warranty. I'm not sure if this is just a fluke mistake, maybe being in contact with the wrong oils or whatever accidentally. It looks like fake leather and PVC being a plastic, I could see it having compatibility issues with some harsher chemicals/oils.

So just curious, is there anything special one can do on this PVC material to help it last longer? Is it even worth the trouble, or are these cheapo covers just made to disintegrate?

You can get specific cleaners that shouldn't react with pvc. Adams polishes, and meguires have cleaners for this specific thing. You could wax them afterwards as most waxes have UV inhibitors, making the plastic last longer.

If at first you don't succeed fail fail again. (Waldorf and Statler.)
