OMG, they claim the base model does 8.9 second 1/4 mile, 620 mile range, 0-60 in less than 2, top speed North of 250.

It seems I'm going to have to change my signature from "Turbo's Rule" to "Batteries Rule".

I get your point. However, performance on the street and on the track are very different things. Electric cars have been performing exceedingly well on Nurburgring, for example. Where the limited range of battery power really does not matter. That does not make the Nurburgring run any less incredible or less fun.

Clearly, battery power will not be moving jet airliners around the country anytime soon. The specific energy is not there, nor is the required heat. That's a job for the excellent specific energy released by burning kerosene.

Is it 1.9 seconds to 60 or 1.9 seconds till the wheels fall off? LOL

Can't wait to see if the Grand Tour tests one. If they'll let them, they sued Top Gear because of Clarkson's less than becoming review on the original Tesla.

They probably will win in Le Mans if it's a one week event only for battery powered cars. And they will need to recharge the car track side and when they do get going, they will go into the "save the battery" mode since all the heat generated from releasing so much energy to the axle.

Tough crowd here at BITOG!!! The Tesla is a rich man's toy. I'm still impressed. I love driving the Model S, P100d, and I can't wait until my friend gets one of these!

I agree it looks great and the performance figures are just maddening.

* feverishly checking pockets to see if there is a spare $200K sitting there somewhere... *

I'll be impressed when they can actually build their existing car at a reasonable production rate.

CGI images and a spec sheet aren't impressive.

I will be impressed when they can do it without the $7K tax credit that comes out of my pocket.

If Tesla is still around five years from now I'll consider one of their cars. Right now I'm still not convinced that they will survive.

I would say we are a cautious and skeptical bunch. Anything can look good on paper.

Tesla can't even get their production line running for the Model 3. They probably released this to get the attention focus on something other than their failing production schedules.

I agree about all the gimmicks including big rig truck that would never work.

As someone that used to work for a car dealership that specialized in hybrids and electrics, the model x we purchased was not well assembled. 1 year old and the overly complicated door mechanism failed. Two Tesla won't sell very many semis with a "you'll get it sometime in 2019". Shipping companies are very time and date driven. Your FedEx package doesn't show up "sometime next week" you tell them overnight or two day shipping.
Besides everyone purchasing tesla has ruined car culture as we know it.

Speaking of which (and probably deserving its own thread), this showed up in my inbox today. Link

Quote:
HAWTHORNE, CA. Tesla finally unveiled its long teased electric Class 8 truck on Nov. 16, which CEO Elon Musk said has a 500-mile range and will result in “economic suicide” for fleets that stick with traditional diesels.

“It blows my mind – I think it will blow yours,” Musk said as he emerged from one of the two prototype Semi day cabs.

Quote:
Musk did not take questions from the media or disclose a purchase price. However, he declared the Semi has “the lowest cost of ownership,” with an estimated cost of $1.26 a mile at a guaranteed 7 cents per kilowatt hour, compared with an average of $1.51 a mile for a conventional diesel.

A Tesla fact sheet said “owners can expect to gain $200,000 or more in savings over a million miles based on fuel costs alone.” Musk added the cost of ownership is nearly half of diesel trucks when the Semis are linked in a platoon.

Musk not only called it “economic suicide” to use a diesel truck, but said the economics of the Tesla Semi outperform freight railroads as well.

Throughout his presentation, he took numerous shots at the overall appearance and performance of today’s conventional trucks.

He said the Tesla Semi goes from 0 mph to 60 mph in 5 seconds without a trailer, compared with 15 seconds for a diesel. It climbs 5% grades at a steady 65 mph, while diesel trucks max out at 45 mph. That makes a “gigantic difference” for truckers who are paid by the mile, he told the audience made up largely of Tesla car owners.

The improved performance is achieved by the vehicle’s “bullet-shaped nose,” completely flat bottom, and reduced gap between the tractor and trailer.

The truck has four Tesla Model 3 electric motors – one for each rear wheel. With no shifting or clutching there is smoother acceleration and deceleration, and its regenerative braking recovers 98% of kinetic energy to the battery, giving it a basically infinite brake life, the company said.

The roomy interior is also quite different than trucks currently available, including a driver seat positioned in the center.

Musk said the centered seat and camera system provide complete visibility of the roads, while two large screens next to the steering wheel provide navigation and other data truckers need while on the road.

Every Semi will come standard with “enhanced autopilot,” including emergency braking, lane keeping assist, and collision avoidance.

Onboard sensors that detect instability and the vehicle’s lower center of gravity means “jackknifing is impossible,” Musk said.

Among the loudest reactions from the crowd came from Musk’ declaration the truck will “not breakdown for 1 million miles.”

Even if two of the four motors break down, the truck will keep running and will “still beat a diesel truck.”

If there are any problems, it will be detected by Tesla’s remote diagnostics service, similar to the many “uptime” features offered by existing truck and engine manufacturers.

One problem truckers should not expect is a cracked windshield, thanks to glass that is thermonuclear explosion proof, Musk claimed, noting that was his favorite feature.

It saddens me to agree that the actual substance of mass production has yet to be revealed at Tesla. Always a cool promo ready, hear the crowd chanting "Elon"!

Also, this “Roadster” isn’t a roadster.

Four seats? Not a roadster.
Targa roof instead of a proper convertible? Not a roadster.
