Shorter than usual run due to schedule and also drastically fewer hours running and idle than typical. UOA in the mail, filter element drying out...

The FL-500s does not seem to be plagued with the issues the FL-820s has. If every MC/Purolator filter looked this good, some faith may be restored.

Thanks for the C&P!

What car and oil was used for this run? Looks like the filter was never used/dipped in fresh oil and pictures taken.. good clean engine and easy on oil whatever it was.

No kidding!!!

Nothing I own ever drains that clean after 4220 miles!

What are the problems with the 820s??

Sometimes the FL820S media will tear near the seam.

Dome end tear.

Thread end tear.

The subject filter looks very good indeed. I wish all the Motorcraft / Purolator filters did this well.

It is Motorcraft 5/20 Blend in a 3.7TiVTC. Most (if not all) of the filters and UOA’s are here, just look for post I created...

I've used the MC 910 and MC 2017 cartridge for years now with no problems with tearing or twisting after my normal 10K OCI.

Though the FL-500s is specified for my Explorer, I use Ultras. Ultras are $4.99 each on eBay in 6 pack quantities and while MC FL-500s filters are $4.40 each in 12 pack quantities, for a $0.60 difference I have no reason to look at MC filters. With that said, these newer MC filters (FL-500s, FL-920s, etc.) do not seem to have any issues.

Looks excellent to me at ~4200 miles. 'Generally speaking', in my observation, excepting some 820S the MC filter anecdotes posted including the 500S and 910S have looked good.

Thanks for c&p.

is this the same size as the FL400S just with a 22mm thread? I know the 400 has a 3/4-16 thread and I have a few I'd be willing to run if they look as a good as this.

I don’t have a 400S on hand, but have some equivalents (XG3600, M1) and they are approximately the same size.
