I was told what type of long term winter temps you'll have is predicted by the position of the jet stream during the third week of November.

I went back and looked at the 2016-17 forecast for my area. It said slightly below normal temps and above normal precipitation. The winter ended slightly above normal on temperatures and we went through a three month snow drought.

Watch the Gulf of Alaska weather for wind patterns. If the jet stream gets pushed up into the polar area then the cold air comes down through the upper Midwest. If the jet stream stay flat then it'w warm weather in the lower 48.

We're getting a "major" snowstorm this weekend according to the local news media. National weather service, wunderground seem to think otherwise. In fact, according to both of them, it's not even going to be below freezing this weekend.
