Tier 3 Requirement.

So low- mid-SAPS oils less an issue here? (Is this old news?)

EU has 10ppm sulfur limit: http://www.transportpolicy.net/standard/eu-fuels-diesel-and-gasoline/

I'd blotters of mid SaPS ACEA C3 oils at 6200 miles OCI with Euro II gasoline of 500 ppm sulfur indicating its efficacy as good as A3B4 .
I don't see any problem in States really.

It all depended upon your OCI. I had tried low SAPS VW 504/507 oil with non-ULSG years ago, and found that it lowered TBN quick but not out of line with the car's already prescribed OCI.

The devil is in the details. For now, the 10ppm figure is a federal annual average. Individual batches are still allowed to have up to 80-95ppm. So how can you tell how much sulfur there exactly is when you pull up to a pump?

Canada is allowed 14 ppm for another 3 years. Batches like previously stated. 10 or so years ago it was 880 ppm here.

Like QP said: devil is in the details. It is still allowed 80+ ppm.
Oil in my Tiguan still smells like sulfur, same like it did in Alabama in my CC. Only place where I could never smell sulfur in gas was in "liberal, god hating tax raising" California where they actually moved into 21st century.

Can the injectors and spark plugs read and differentiate the sulfur ppm and response appropriately ?
Is the numerical #'s over-hyped here ?

Why would ECU be calibrated to recognize sulfur levels?

Not sure what injectors and spark plugs have to do with what is being discussed here.

Higher sulfur levels cause more rapid TBN depletion, which means you should not be running long OCIs with low/mid SAPS oils.
