1973 Yamaha RD350 2 stroke engine. Yamaha recommends 10w30 motor oil for the gear case. Now most car oil 10w30 have additive the 70s oil didn't have.

Instead of a motorcycle specific 10w30 oil, what about using Maxima MTL transmission oil, it comes in 75w(XL), 80w(R) and 85w(E).

Which one would be the equivalent of the 10w30? 80W?

SAE Viscosity 75wt 80wt 85wt
Color D1500 Honey Honey Honey
Viscosity cSt @ 40°C D2270 31.63 63.45 89.29
Viscosity cSt @ 100°C D2270 5.54 8.57 10.66
Viscosity Index D2270 125 125 135
Flash Point °C D92 425 465 500
Pour Point °C D92 -15 -12 -10

You could, MTL is fine for a 2t gearbox.
Ford F fluid is as well.
I ran a lot of Shockproof Light in the MX bikes, that's another option.
beanoil: Tough under heat, real dirty afterwards.

I know it is fine, but I was curious to know the WT equivalent of 10w30.

Ford F fluid is interesting, I think the Yamaha Banshee crowd uses that. That being said, I would use Castrol GTX 10w40 before Ford transmission oil!

according to this chart, a 30 wt oil is equal to a thick 80 to 85 wt gear oil.

A straight 30 would also be pretty close.

Motul makes a 10W-30 gearbox / wet clutch safe lubricant,
Transoil 2T looks to be a mineral and is mostly marketed for dirt bikes.

They also offer a synthetic, Transoil Expert 10W-40.

Myself have tried every imaginable lubricant in my YZ125 motocross gearbox,
from thin Type-F to thicker Rotella T 15W-40 and everything in between.

Have now settled on Motomaster 10W-30 Semi-Synthetic Diesel engine oil (likely Rotella T5 re-badged),
not JASO rated but has not shown any signs of slippage in 3 dirt bikes I run it in.

In all that I've ran, it's actually the oil that retains the best shifting qualities the longest.

Redline MTL (manual transmission Lube) will give you a whole new feel. Shift quick and slick. I pour it all the manual gearboxes (except heavy trucks - cost ...) cause it works so well smile
