Why is Castrol GTX now labelled semi synthetic?

I figure it's probably because the standards on conventional oil are getting really tough to meet that most are adding synthetic components to their oil to meet specifications and why not advertise it.

Also probably to justify the price because Castrol GTX is much more than PYB for example, at least here anyway.

There's no GTX any more. You're thinking of GTX Ultraclean. Similar name, but different product.

It says "Synthetic blend" for the GTX Ultraclean, which is only available in 5w20 and 5w30.

Here's the pdf's from Castrol, read in the paragraph under "description"

5w20

Now about the GTX, while the GTX Ultraclean is now what the 5w20 and 5w30 is called.. The rest of the oil 10w30, 10w40 and 20w50 is conventional and still called GTX.

I ran into this when I was looking to use Castrol GTX and found the GTX Ultraclean popping up in place of the GTX. The only difference (after I sent off samples to the lab) is it's now a synthetic blend. The additive package is basically the same thing. Which is a good thing!

with the advent of cheap group III "synthetics" that are mostly used today it takes a very small amount to be advertised as semi-synthetic!!! all of todays oils are a blend of various base oils + additives used to meet the spec they are showing on the container!

Typical. 10W-30 is always getting shortchanged.

hey Merkava_4, I didn't make the marketing decision.

but I hear ya.. I really don't think it's much of a change at all, I did the VOA's and it's not like it's missing much of anything if you use GTX or the GTX Ultraclean, just a bit more detergents, not much to upset me, personally.

That's GTX Magnatec, which is yet another different product from GTX.
