I think some of them had cam phaser issues.
 
Both of my Ford Fusions have VVT and to date no problems. However with that said, a quality oil is all the more important with VVT, as heavy varnish or sludge can adversely effect the operation of the devise.

Hasn't Honda been using something similar with the VTEC but adding another valve when VTEC is engaged? Didn't know that vvt was oil pressure activated.

i-VTEC is VTEC with VVT (cam phasing).

there is the VTEC-E, which on the regular economy cam profile, it shut off one of the intake valves per cylinder. The performance cam profile used all of the intake valves.
